motivation of scientists to leave academia or other setting to undertake an entrepreneurial venture. He suggested that more work in this area was advisable (Samsom, 1990).
Degeorge and Fayolle (2004) examined the relationship between the intent to create a venture and the behaviors that actually led to new venture creation in scientific endeavors. They conducted a longitudinal study using engineers in France. They concluded that motivation involves value creation where the basis for entrepreneurial action is a planned behavior designed to create a change in the given environment and that those who aimed to create new value would develop intentions based on both internal and external influences (Degeorge & Fayolle, 2004). The researchers believed this model explained motivations for the new venture creation process but acknowledged that the triggers leading to entrepreneurship were understudied.
Standish-Koun (2007) studied the motivations of university researchers and the commercialization of their work outside of the academic setting. The effects of risk, obligation to the current employer, scientific reputation, allure of monetary rewards, and lack of in-depth knowledge of entrepreneurship were considered. She found that the intention to commercialize a discovery had a direct, positive effect on the actual behavior. A scientist's propensity for risk also had a direct, positive effect on entrepreneurial intentions, as did knowledge of the entrepreneurial endeavor. Results were inconsistent for reputation, obligation to the current employer, and the lure of rewards. This suggests intentionality, risk acceptance, and knowledge of commercialization activities are essential precursors to the new venture creation experience.
RESEARCH PURPOSE AND QUESTION
Statement of the Problem
Scientific entrepreneurs are responsible for innovation and bringing scientific discoveries, and hence jobs, to the marketplace and economy. The vulnerability and the lack of successful entrepreneurial new ventures, the demand for these services, and the important contributions they make to addressing environmental problems suggests the importance of environmental entrepreneurship. Because of this, an in-depth understanding of the environmental professional as they transition into entrepreneurship is necessary information for capacity building in the United States.
The existing data on scientific entrepreneurs, while descriptive, does not fully divulge the essence of the experience for current and nascent environmental entrepreneurs with regard to the triggers and motivations that foster their engagement in the new venture creation process. Motivational theories suggest the desire for self-actualization and self-esteem might be primary motivators of the environmental entrepreneur. Other theories suggest an expectancy for reward. However, the well-published data on entrepreneurial risks and failure rates would seem to temper any such enthusiasm. Moreover, the suggestion that these risks are unknown to the scientist contraindicates the intelligence these individuals must surely bring to the research phase of the new venture creation process. Yet, specific research does not exist to substantiate why these individual enter into the new venture creation process or what is their experience.
