B. The Indulgence in the Materialistic Enjoyment
1.The Diminished Influence of the Confucianism
The generations of 1980s are rootless, uprooted from the
history. As the society entered into the industrial society, born in the period when the history turns its new pages, all the traditions were faded away. What is history? At a period when the assembly line completed a car in every ten seconds, and the advertisement are directed to the sight of the people, the history to the ‘generation of 1980s’ only means, the outdated car, the soured food, and the clothes which are not in the vogue. The traditional values, which once exerted great influence on the Chinese people, have faded away. The free market economy exposed the 1980s to the fierce business competition, and everyone tried their best to rival against others. The Confucianism which advises people concentrate on self-cultivate and commit themselves to the harmony society becomes outdated, because this philosophy could help the 1980s to win the game in daily life, and couldn’t help the youth to improve their living standard. Nowadays nothing could arouse the attention of the 1980s except the things are useful to them. When they make decisions they no longer followed the principle which has been written in the Analects 3000 years ago. As a means for reinforcing a groups social bonds and relieving tensions, traditional rituals is the most complex and persistent symbolic activities associated with the Confucianism almost have been put aside by the 1980. It is embedded in every Chinese people’s mind that “an individual could not be separated from the family than a finger from the hand.” But now this concept also has been impact by the economy. The families have less influence on the youth. People in traditional family shared property and all material possessions, food work and love, performed religious rituals together, and often live under the same roof. Even the traditional Chinese youth are told to achieve mainly for the family. But under the impact of the free-market economy, the Chinese 1980s got to pursue his own happiness in the world, and of course, they have been given the opportunity to achieve it. It seems that the booming of the economy have put the opportunity into everyone’s hands. They become more self –reliance and unwilling to go home to listen to their parent’s advice or turn for the help.
2. The Impact from the West
The Chinese intellects always tried the best to seek the truth in the western world. And during the 200 years, the western ideology has been exerted great influence on the Chinese tradition, especially when the world become a small village, stirred up by the information technology, the youth have more chance to get acquaint to the west. After China adopt the open door policy, the western impact on the youth become stronger and stronger. Despite the influence of the daily commodities, such as the KFC, or Holly Wood movies, the western ideology embedded on the Chinese 1980s. Take the attitude toward the equality as an example, contrary to the traditional ethics stresses to respect the seniorities, the 1980s accept the western equality. And the American dream also roots deeply in peoples mind
