al and Columbia supplied pictures to the majors, and United Artists was a distribution company for a small group of independents. Theaters owned by the five companied took in more than 75 percent of the nation’s box-office receipts. Until now, the Hollywood’s movie companies still inherit the tradition of vertical integration for having a dominant position in competition.
For Chinese movie companies, many of them are just at the beginning line of their race compared to American movie companies. Before 80s of the 20th, the central government operated China’s movie industry centrally. In the background of planned economy, Chinese movies’ style is quite limited and lack enthusiasm. This kind of operation mechanism soon exposes its shortages after China’s executing of opening policy at the beginning of 1980s. In 80s, the government had innovated several times. However, these innovations had all been proved a failure in the end. Many movie companies lack competitive ability in the opener market and are finally knocked down because of this. In 1997, the government moved away its protection of state-owned movie-making companies. Until then the monopoly of state-owned movie-making companies had been broken through. However, the shortage of lacking competitive ability and equipments make Chinese movie companies always be at the margin of this competitive market. Now, these are three major movie-making companies—Shanghai movie-making company, Beijing movie-making company, Changchun movie-making company and other sixteen movie companies runned by the state. None of them can be the adversary of any one among the “Big Eight”.
Beside the
strategy of vertical integration, the transverse integration is also a way to strengthing the Hollywood movies’ competitive ability and this is what Chinese industry can not compete with. This integration makes American movie industry become the mega-industry of motion pictures and tie in with other industries, which give American movies industry a steady circulation of economic support.
In the view of economy, sidelines of movie industry can affect movie industry in a positive way and they support each other, Hollywood movies have a nice taste for knowing this theory. In American society, sideline products of the movie can be seen everywhere. Movie industry sideline products are more and more necessary in American people’s daily life nowadays.
Presently, Hollywood is not satisfied with staying in the theaters’ screen any more. They jump out from the screen and have affected other industry fields, such as television programs, computer games, disc recording and so on. In marketing operation field, the influence covers toys, food, articles of everyday use, theme parks, magazines and so on. In American society, these sideline products are tied with Americans’ daily life closely and bring rich and generous profits to the mega-movie industry. Among them, television programs, computer games, toys, theme parks make the largest contribution to mega movie industry. American computer games, which develop from movies, own players worldwide and they support movie in the same way. The toys developed from movies also gain the affections both of children’s and adults’. The little toys made from the image of characters in Finding Nemo were sold out when they were just put into market in New York. The same thing also happened in Beijing. All have proved this: The transverse integration have made American movie industry become a pow
