and age. Charity foundation had important effects on American internal affaires and diplomacy. And now, doing charities is also popular in America.
4. The Charitable Deeds of American Millionaires
The American millionaires are the personification of the American dream. Few millionaires started with inherited wealth. It is an interesting phenomenon. Many, having devoted their youth to making money, spent their later year donating money. Henry Clay Frick, the iron and steel magnate, was a master. He exploited immigrant workers by making them work excessively long hours for little money. But he gave the wonderful collection of pictures, sculptures and furniture to the city of New York, along with the elegant mansion on Fifth Avenue.
Frick’s great friend and colleague, Andrew Carnegie, Scot by birth, said “The man who dies rich, dies disgraced”. With money be earned from steel, he bought up steamship lines, railroads, coal mines, oil fields, and was worth 400 million when he retired. But he felt guilty about his wealth and at the age of 65, he began to donate it . He is very famous for the 3000 public libraries he founded in America, Britain and other English-speaking countries.
Cormelius Vanderbilt, who made his fortune on steamship and railroad lines, was worth 100 million dollars towards the end of his life. He felt the time had come to donate most of it. So he donated his money to a university in Nashville Tennessee which was called after him—Vanderbilt University.
The Rockefeller family, who made their money through banking and oil, donated 530 million to medical research and education. They founded two national parks and in the 1930s and 1940s built the vast Rockefeller centre in the middle of Manhattan, with its movie house (the biggest in the world), its open air skating rink, and its outdoor café.

American charity started earlier and inherited the tradition of European charity. The main areas to which American philanthropists donate are education, politics, science and the poor.
Education is primary. Many universities were built depending on the donation of philanthropists. Boston University was one of the earliest schools in the eastern of America. Most of its buildings were donated by philanthropists. There were steles with the donors’ name at the entrance of buildings. Bill Gates’ charity foundation has donated more than 3 billion dollars since 1999 for education programs and scholarships. He also encourages lawmakers to push for higher educational standards and to make more challenging courses available to students.
Secondly, politics also received donation. Philanthropists’ donation is the most important source of American politics. America is a country which has many political activities, for example, voting takes place nearly every year. The funds mostly come from donation.
Helping the poor is the third area. There are many special foundations to help the poor in developing countries, such as, those countries in Africa and Asia. Many of Gates’ donations who is the first man of American charity was offered to some countries in Africa.
II. The Reasons for American Millionaires’ Charities
