Englishidioms is one of the most abundant and attractive linguistic landscape among all humanlanguages. This thesis is intended to tell the formation of idioms in terms of their culturereasons, i.e., by new theory of linguistics~presupposition. Cultural presupposition is onebranch of presupposition, and it is one category of pragmatics. Suppose people in the sameculture have mutual understanding of that culture, something the non-native speaker cannotunderstand till they learn to. That is presupposition in a general and very limited sense.Because idiom is a popular subject, many scholars used idioms as a tool or study into it intranslation, etc. However, what we try to do is not to use or summarize it, in this thesis weshall research into the formation by the means of cultural presupposition to prove thehypothesis that English as a representative formed on the basis of cultural presupposition, andso do other languages all over the world. By this conclusion we can get a comprehensivecognition of idioms and English culture，and may make a radical progress in foreign languageacquisition.

　　It is the westerners who first studied into idioms，or, to be more precise, to study intowestern idioms. It was not until last century did there formed a systematic theory of idioms.Back to the 1870s-1910s, there were writers who wrote about idioms or characteristics ofidioms in different districts. That kind of articles is more like reports rather than papers. Forexamples: On a Virgilian Idiom written by Plant Arthur in the year 1895, PennsylvanianIdioms which was published by Note and Queries in the year 1870.
