Will students from different cultural backgrounds insist on their own culture when communicating with each other, or accommodate themselves to others? Absolutely, most of them will continue to keep indigenous culture and according to the situation to adhere to others appropriately. This will make small fiction between domestic students and foreign students in learning and life. Since the contradiction and friction inevitably occur, the key lies in how we should treat this mentality. Shall we escape? Or suspend? And still positive to face and come up with solutions? Now, I will tell an experience that happened to me.
In my junior high school, there were many foreign students; Students who came from different cultures and lifestyle. Sufi was coming from France while I was a Chinese student. Both of us liked playing Volleyball very much. Every morning I watch the volleyball class, because it was Cindy’s volleyball class time. Sufi was also in her class, so we met a few times, and had eye contact some times. One day, Sufi was playing volleyball and hit the ball in the field accidently. I helped her pick up it and gave her a smile. She replied with a smile and had a little regret in her tone when she said “Thank you”.
One day, after playing volleyball, I was getting my coat off from the clothes stand. I took down all the clothes to get my own coat. At this time, Sufi ran in with Cindy. I smiled to them, but Sufi had no reply to me, she had a solemn expression instead, I didn’t notice that at this moment. Then I dropped a coat on the ground. But Sufi was frowning. I saw Sufi’s expression, I was a bit overwhelmed, and try to hang all the clothes back at the same time. But there were too many coats, and the stand was little high for me. I tried for several times, all the coats just keep falling down. Mean while, Sufi helped me to hang up all the cloth but muttered at the same time. I only heard she was speaking French with unsatisfied emotion. This time, Sufi said with not standard Chinese in a very heavy tone: “Give them to me!” She was tugging the clothes away, frowning and angry. Sufi was really tall, so it was easy for her to put all the cloth back on. Then Sufi turned back and staring at me straight. My face felt very hot and red even though I didn’t know how I made her so angry. But I had to express the feelings that I feel sorry but also helpless. I apologized to her, but she did not care. Then my classmate Angela who was beside us said: “ It's ok, don't worry, don't worry."
After a week on Thursday, I was in physics class. I looked outside I saw Sufi standing outside, and she signaled with her hands for a moment. I waved to her quickly, and then she pointed to the windbreaker, and again pointed her own coat and then made a gesture swap. I understood her meaning immediately, nodded and smiled, and gave an “Ok” sign to her. After talking with each other and now I know what did I do that made Sufi so angry. I forgot that she was a foreign student coming from France, and we have different cultural backgrounds. In China, we don’t mind other people touch or laying a finger on our own clothes. But in France, they extraordinarily mind this. To be frank, I don't speak French, English was also not fluent. And Sufi was not influent in Chinese nor Englilsh.
