If a definition is to be given, social responsibility is the inner urge to take initiative to do good deeds for the vulnerable and the needy out of humanitarian and philanthropic ideals seeking to promote the welfare of others. It connects the individual with the communities and the wider world by the belief and activities of good causes. The area of issues it covers relate to the most fundamental social issues: poverty, education, starvation, malnutrition of children, public health, human rights, the help for the disabled and the senior citizen, and the dealings of environment deterioration and climate change, all of which calls for collective efforts to address.
However speaking of social responsibility, the hot topic concerning this issue shall fall onto corporate responsibility. Many scholars have debated about the interwoven relationship between business partitioning and its responsibilities to the society. In the book Capitalism and Freedom, Friedman proposed his view that “there is one and only one social responsibility of business—to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition without deception or fraud.” There are voices for and against business’s assumption of more significant roles, however, as a hallmark of a mature civilization, civic engagement in social work can be held accountable as a reasonable measurement of degrees of social responsibility.
According to different degrees of social involvement and commitment, the concept could be segmented into three levels, of which legal responsibility defines the most fundamental obligations of a citizen, the ethical responsibility exalt the moral value beyond the boundary of law, and the philanthropic responsibility intends to address the well being of humans. The components of social responsibilities, legal, ethical and philanthropic responsibilities constitute a structure like a pyramid, with the legal component making the basic foundation of the pyramid and the philanthropic resting on the top level.
