2. Literature Review

2.1 The definition and classification of meme
In Oxford English Dictionary, the “meme” is explained as “an element of culture thatmay be considered to be passed on by non-genetic means, esp. imitation”. In AmericanWebster’s Dictionary, it is interpreted as “an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads fromperson to person within a culture”. Some scholars define “meme” as the information unit inone’s memory, and it could replicate one person to another. Simply speaking, it just likes akind of virus of the mind.In our domestic academic circles, there are also a lot of translations of “meme”. HeZiran (1999) professor translated it into “模因”,intending people to make a connection withthe imitation phenomena, which is similar to “基因”. “模因”, with the similar pronunciationto”基因”, is the meaning of “similar because of the same gene”. So meme refers to thecultural gene, namely the thought of imitating each other and spreading out in culture fields.Meme spread through duplication and imitation, and it is the basic unit of the culture.Memes, according to their pragmatic functions, can be divided to strong memes andweak memes. Almost all languages are potential memes, but only those which are widelyreplicated and continuously propagated in a certain period of time can be called as strongmemes, while others which are forgotten or even disappeared with the passage of time andchanges of environment are weak memes.

2.2 Related studies of memetics abroad
In 1890, French sociologist Gabriel Tarade, the founder of Memetics, proposed a set ofbasic rules in his work The Laws of Imitation, presented that all the analogues of socialcommunication origin were the direct or indirect results of all kinds of imitation ways. Thewhole social history is all about imitation. It was imitation that made someone’s inventionbecome the shared wealth of all the people. In 1976, Richard Dawkins wrote the book The Selfish Gene on the basis of exploringgene duplication and rival biological evolution, firstly coming up with the concept of “meme”.Since Darkins firstly referred to meme, much time had passed and several scientists had paidtheir attention to this field, such as the famous philosopher Daniel Dennett who explained theevolution process of human consciousness using meme theory in his two booksConsciousness Explained and Darwin’s Dangerous Idea.In 1996, Brodie and Lynch separately published Viruses of the Mind: the New Scienceof the Meme and Thought Contagion: How Belief Spreads through Society. In their works, they focused on the meme research, and made their own contribution to Memeticdevelopment in different ways.
