Chapter One Introduction
Intercultural communications refer to two-way activities.In the modern world,it has been an universal focus to all the people from different cultures that need to contact with each other.As far as vocational English majors are concerned,it is worthwhile investigating the general level of their competence of expressing Chinese culture in English and the problems in teaching culture for vocational English majors.Pedagogical implications are expected to be put forward based on the research data.
1.1 The Research Background
With the development of economy,internationalism has been an inevitable trend in every aspects of the society including cultural exchange.Vocational English majors are enjoying more chances to contact with foreign affairs which require them to be skilled and competent in intercultural communication.
Intercultural communication has three elements:verbal communication,which mainly means language,nonverbal communication such as body language,and perceptual elements like value and worldview.Generally speaking,intercultural communication means the contacts among different cultures.The relationship between language and culture is clear enough that teaching culture has been a common topic since 1950s.With the introduction of communicative teaching method introduced into our country,the important role that culture can play in language teaching and learning has been stably settled.A great number of cultural knowledge is added in language teaching and learning process,but western cultural information takes the most part at that time.
In the year 2000,Cong Cong,a professor of Nanjing University defined the term Chinese Culture Aphasia for the first time in the article of Chinese Culture Aphasia: Deficiency of English Teaching.From the view of intercultural communication,Chinese Culture Aphasia can be defined as failure or inefficiency of communication in the process of expressing Chinese culture in English.Since‘Chinese Culture Aphasia’was firstly defined in the year of 2000 on Guangming Daily,the related articles have been popping out.It is stated that from the year of 2000 to the year of 2010,there were all in all 46 articles published,with one of them doctoral thesis,ten of them thesis for Master’s Degree,the others published in the periodicals(Huang Qiuchang,2011).From this point of view,researchers have made various studies based on different conditions and subjects which can be divided into theoretical researches and experimental studies.
