Chapter One Introduction


在中国,是一个人口众多,学习英语作为一门外语(英语)。而对于中国学生来说,英语课堂似乎是获得语言的主要场所。英语写的课堂上,老师讲(TT),大大发挥了重要作用,在英语教学和学习。TT是介质不仅在课堂教学和学习外国语言,还教师开展教学的任务和组织教学活动的一个不可缺少的工具。本研究探讨高中英语课堂上老师讲其外以下三个理论观点,即,输入,输出和互动。在本章中,首先,笔者将简要说明研究座落在高中英语教学改革的背景下。其次,笔者将讨论这项研究的目的和意义,解决老师谈特别。本论文的最后,本组织将提供。In China, there is a large population learning English as a foreign language(EFL). Andfor Chinese students, EFL classroom seems to be the main place to acquire the language. InEnglish classroom, teacher talk(TT) plays a greatly important role in English teaching andlearning. TT is not only the medium of foreign language teaching and learning in classroom,but also an indispensable tool for teachers to carry out teaching tasks and to organize teachingactivities. The present study examines senior high school English classroom teacher talk fromthe following three theoretical perspectives, namely, input, output and interaction. In thischapter, firstly, the author will describe briefly the background where the study situates insenior high school English teaching reform. Secondly, the author will discuss the purpose andthe significance for this study which addresses teacher talk particularly. Finally, theorganization of this thesis will be provided.


1.1 Research Background
English is a compulsory course for senior high school students in China. And traditionalteacher-centered instruction has been dominating for a long time. In the typical Englishclassroom, the teacher talks most of the time, while the students only listen to the teacher.There is not enough interaction, what’s worse, it is even considered to be impolite for studentsto give different opinion or raise questions when the teacher is teaching (Huang, 2002; Wang,2005).As we all know, English class attaches great importance to both English teaching andEnglish learning. It has a special feature which is different from other classes in that teachertalk, the language adopted by teachers of English, is not only the medium of teaching but alsothe target language(TL) of the learners. Teacher talk plays multiple roles in English class, forexmaple, providing language input, explaining new words and grammar items, instructingactivities, managing classroom discipline, and providing feedback. Nunan(1991:189)maintains that teacher talk is of crucial importance, not only for the organization of theclassroom but also for the process of acquisition. In terms of the organization andmanagement of the classroom, TT is essential because it is by means of the target languagethat EFL teachers implement their teaching plan successfully or unsuccessfully. With regard to acquisition, TT is significant since it seems to be the main source of comprehensible TL forlearners to receive.For those Chinese students who learn English in China, without sufficient targetlanguage environment, there is no other choice than English class. In other words, classroomteaching is one of the most important ways that students learn English. The interactionbetween learners and teachers in the classroom plays an significant part in improvingstudents’ communicative competence.
The Ministry of Education has launched a nationwide campaign focusing on developingstudents’ capabilities to use English in an all-round way. In 2004, new English CurriculumStandard (for Trial Implementation) was issued by the Ministry of Education.
