Conclusion
This chapter will summarize the main findings of this research and present the pedagogical and practical implications of this study. Finally, the limitations of this research and suggestions for future studies are given. This thesis is an empirical research designed to find the intonational features of statements produced by Northeastern English learners. After the detailed analysis, the main findings can be summarized as follows: The features of intonation phrases: firstly, Northeastern English learners prefer using pause as the most important method to achieve the phrase segmentation and the other three IP markers are rarely used by them. Secondly, there are more intermediate phrases in English learners’ speech, and compared with native speakers, the length of English learners’ IPs is obviously shorter. Thirdly, Northeastern English learners may take the first content word in a sentence as an IP, and they also take an individual article as an IP in their speech all the time. The features of prominence distribution: at first, no matter what focus type the sentences are, the prominent words or syllables of Northeastern English learners are obviously more than those of native speakers; English learners even take prepositions or articles as prominent points. Secondly, when the focus is placed at the beginning of the sentence, the syllabic number has little influence on accent distribution of the whole sentence, while, if the focus is placed at the medial or final part of the sentence, the fluctuation of disyllabic word is greater than that of tri-syllabic word. Thirdly, when the focus is placed at the final part of the sentence, Northeastern English learners may ignore the word stress of the focus and blindly use a final falling tone. Fourthly, in the case of broad focus, native speakers will obey the “Tonicity’s Conditions” theory to highlight the final content word of an IP, while the English learners may highlight the final content word regardless of the placement and the type of focus. Fifthly, the correlation between the prominence distribution and content words is high and the correlation
