Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Research Background

The New Curriculum Standard emphasizes that in grammar teaching,teachersshould pay attention to presenting new grammatical knowledge in context,instructingstudents to observe how to use grammatical knowledge in context,and practicing anddoing activities in different environments to help students use grammatical knowledgeto express meaning in context.Grammar teaching is not only about guiding studentsto understand grammatical knowledge,but also about developing students’ability touse grammar by explaining certain grammatical knowledge in a context.Creatingcontexts in grammar teaching is very important.Teachers should construct meaning incontexts so that students can understand grammatical knowledge in meaningfullanguage and use it in communication,which is the direction that English grammarteaching in China should develop.

Grammar teaching has a very important position in English teaching.However,nowadays,junior high school students have weak awareness of grammar learning.They think grammar learning is boring and tedious.What students experience areonly rules and repetitive mechanical exercises.Teachers ignore students'classparticipation,which makes the teaching effect greatly reduced.Thus leading tostudents'poor language foundation and frequent comprehension and expression errorsin writing and reading.The teaching of English grammar in the junior high school isof great importance to cultivate students'solid language skills.Grammar learning isan important part of language learning,which directly affects the formation ofstudents'comprehensive language skills.

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Study

In this research,grammar instruction is delivered in middle schools inunderdeveloped areas using a multimodal teaching mode.The effectiveness ofmultimodal teaching mode on the grammar learning of students in underdevelopedareas will be examined in this study using both qualitative and quantitative research.This study uses a variety of methods for research to try to find the answers to tworesearch questions in order to accomplish its goal.Additionally,this study aims tooffer English teachers in underdeveloped middle schools an innovative approach to instructing grammar as well as a new theory to help students learn English grammar.More specifically,this study aims to provide answers to the following researchquestions.The first question is,“Is multimodal teaching applied to teaching grammarin underdeveloped areas more beneficial to students’learning of grammar thantraditional teaching method?”.The second question is,“What are junior high schoolstudents'attitudes toward multimodal teaching on English grammar teaching inunderdeveloped areas?”

It is important to study the teaching of multimodal grammar from twoperspectives.One benefit is that it can improve the theory of multimodal teaching ofEnglish grammar.The other benefit is that it can provide teaching experiences toEnglish teachers in rural areas to help them adopt the multimodal grammar teachingmode and improve their teaching situation.
