摘要:According to New English Curriculum Standards, lead-in is a rather essential part in teaching, whichcan directly affect the quality and effectiveness of teaching. In recent years, both Chinese scholars andeducators have shown their great interests in lead-in, but in real class, this step is always ignored.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 The Background of the Study
China has undergone several curriculum reforms these years and effective teaching has been paidmore and more attention. Effective teaching has been quite emphasized in new reforms and New EnglishCurriculum Standards (Trial) (2003) requires teachers to have new concepts in mind to make teachingeffective in many aspects (Wang Fei, 2009; Zhu Jinwei, 2010; Yang Pingping, 2010). Additionally, itadvocates curriculum design should focus on students’ interest, life experiences and cognitive level.Different types of lessons are also put forward the corresponding class activities. For listening, speaking,reading and writing, the four language skills, Standards pointed out that at the very beginning of each kindof lessons, teachers need to stimulate students’ interest, desire and clear learning objectives which laybedding for this class. The class activities designed for this purpose are called lead-in. All things mentionedabove can conclude the importance of lead-in. Appropriate lead-in is directly related to the effectiveness ofteaching. As is known to all, words like “front”, “beginning” and “first time” can attract a person most.Similarly, lead-in is like the abstract of a paper and before leafing a paper, readers usually read the abstractfirst. If the abstract can attract the readers’ eyeballs, make them be interested in this paper or think itvaluable, the readers will go on reading willingly. As the first step of a class, lead-in must create goodcondition for the following learning content. So teachers should draw students’ attention, arouse theirlearning enthusiasm and make them get clear about the learning goals in a short time in order to carry outteaching efficiently and smoothly. This means a well-designed lead-in can lay a solid foundation to asuccessful class. It can make students prepare a good mentality for learning, thus they put their heart intoclass actively so that the teaching procedure will be relaxed, smooth and students are willing to accept newknowledge.

1.2 The Significance and Purpose of the Study
According to New English Curriculum Standards, lead-in is a rather essential part in teaching, whichcan directly affect the quality and effectiveness of teaching. In recent years, both Chinese scholars andeducators have shown their great interests in lead-in, but in real class, this step is always ignored.Theauthor conducting a survey on lead-in aims to know if teachers emphasize on lead-in part, what ways oflead-in they usually use, and what ways students like best. All of things mentioned above tried to maketeachers from Senior High School realize the importance of lead-in. Based on theoretical knowledge onteaching, teachers should be able to design lead-in that can arouse students’ interest and curiosity in order tolet students study autonomously. What is more, lead-in teachers designed should embody students-centredteaching concept, construct the connection between previous and present knowledge so that students canstudy purposefully and their enthusiasm to learn English is set off. The author writes this paper will giveteachers more ways of lead-in and help them improve the teaching quality.
