摘要:The situation of low achievers in English in middle schools gives me the impetusto explore the possible causes. My study mainly focuses on students' motivation,personality and learning strategy, as I find that excellent learners tend to show strongEnglish learning motivation and great interest in English-speaking countries' culture.

Chapter 1 Introduction


1.1 General situation of English learning in Hang Zhou Jing Fang Middle School
In the end of each semester,schools always organize final examinations to testhow much their students have learned. This is no exception in Hang Zhou Jing FangMiddle School. Hang Zhou Jing Fang Middle School is the school in which I teachEnglish. It has 3 grades and 24 classes. Last semester, our school had a final Englishexam as usual. The results of the exam can be seen from Table 1. In this exam, the full score of English paper is 120, pass mark is 72 and excellentline is 102.From the table, we can see that in Grade 1,there are six classes whose pass ratesare less than 70%, in Grade 2 seven classes are less than 70%, and in Grade 3, alleight classes are below 70%. These numbers show that there is still a large proportionof students failing in this exam, some of them even got ten, twenty or so, thesestudents, we may call them low achievers in English learning. However, from theexcellent rate columns, we can find that there is a small portion of students in eachclass who performed quite well in this exam, these students are top students. Fromthis exam, we know that in Hang Zhou Jing Fang Middle School there exist lowachievers and top students in English learning, the number of the former appears morethan that of the latter.

1.2 Requirements of the New Curriculum Standards
In its preface, The New Curriculum Standards has stressed the importance ofEnglish in a broad sense, which reads, English, as a global language, is becomingmore and more important for international communication and exchange in politics,science, culture and so forth. As an emissary for peace and development, Chinashould make English an obligatory course in the compulsory education, so as to raiseits national spirit, cultivate more cross-cultural talents, and enhance its competitiveforce in global trend (2011:1).The Standards also insinuates the significance of English teaching and learning inprimary schools and middle schools, especially in middle schools. According to theStandards, middle school learning is the final stage of the nine-year compulsoryeducation in China, at this stage, every student should reach the fifth level at whichthey have mastered basic speaking, listening, writing skills(2011: 6).English teaching in compulsory education system aims to develop students'general language application ability,promote their healthy growth, as well as toimprove their humanistic quality(2011: 8). Compulsory education refers to educationfor all Chinese children, so English teaching, as one of its required courses, shouldalso include every student in. Thus,English teachers, especially those who work inmiddle schools, should make much greater effort to improve the low achievers'English level.

2.1 General introduction to IDs development in second language studies
