1.2   Purpose and Significance 
The thesis analyzes the verbal humor by using relevance theory. It tries to reveal the comprehension process of verbal humor based on the analysis of humorous lines in Conan. Then the study also tries to interpret the strategies used in the talk show to create humorous effects and the barriers in understanding humor in the talk show. The study of the verbal humor in talk show Conan based on the relevance theory has both theoretical and practical significance. In theory, the study may be helpful for future  studies  since  it  provides  a  new  perspective  in  interpreting  verbal  humor  and comprehension process in American talk shows. Most of the previous studies analyze verbal humor from the angle of linguistics or the verbal humor in TV series instead of the vivid language in talk shows. Practically, it can help different audiences appreciate humorous  utterances  in  talk  shows.  Furthermore,  it  is  a  good  chance  to  know  more about western culture during the comprehension process. For many English teachers, they  can  use  the  classic  humors  to  arouse  students’  interests  in  learning  English  and activate the atmosphere during the classes.

2.1   Nature of Humor 
The  word  “humor”  is  very  common  and is  familiar  to  all the  people  around  the world. It exists everywhere in human life: in the communication, in movies, in books, in  newspapers  or  magazines  and  so  on.  Laugh  that  caused  by  humor  can  always  be heard  everywhere.  What’s  more,  the  comical  plots,  funny  stories  and  witty communication occur nearly every day on everyone. Humor is so popular and people enjoy it very much because we can get great pleasure and relaxation from it.  Since  the  definition  of  humor  is  complex  and  involves  so  many  forms,  it  is  not easy to define it exactly. It is different from situation to situation and from culture to culture. Different scholars have different views. Although a large number of scholars in  the  field  of  linguistics,  sociology,  psychology  and  many  others  has  studied  in  the defining of humor since ancient time, there is no unified answer that can cover exactly all the aspects.
