literature. In the novelThe Red Thread, the hero Shen Fuling is an appraiser of an auction company in Shanghai whois well educated in American and comes back to China for work. In most literary works, theChinese men are often presented like this: in learning, they are the rigid and snobbish scholarswho are shortsighted and unwilling to accept foreign science and technology. They only stayat home or their own country and stick to their own culture blindly, no matter what theirculture offers: essence or dross. In family relationship, they are obedient and submissive sons.Their parents especially the father is their principle and they do all the things according totheir parents’ willing or the family’s rules. They don’t have their own likes and dislikes andtheir own ideas both in career and marriage. But in this novel, the hero Shen subverts this kindof image, instead, he is open-minded and independent, and he has his own idea and makes hisdecision based on his own heart. In work, he follows his own heart and comes back to Chinato do what he is interested in. When he is studying abroad, he often visits a museum where there are many Chinese works of art. He has a strong interest in these works which show theChinese culture, and every time he appreciates these works, he can really comprehend thebeauty and the sublime within them and does not want to leave. And eventually he comesback to China and finds a job as an appraiser of an auction company in Shanghai. In here, hecan put his love for his own country’s culture into his daily work. He can keep such kind offeeling on all the works of art which need him to evaluate their value. He loves his job andkeeps a sober mind. He is upright and will not cheat other people and himself even if he maylose his job. He never forgets his identity. He is a Chinese man who receives education inAmerica, and his father wants him to find a job about economy. But he is not interested ineconomy at all. What he really likes is the research for Chinese culture. So he follows his ownhearts and takes a lot of time to observe the Chinese antique or other works of art. He has aclear idea about what he wants even it is against his father’s will and expectation which mighthave turned him into a businessman.

With the development of globalization and multiculturalism, the communication amongdifferent cultures is under way. As pointed out by Zhai Jing, “It is impossible for those whocome from different cultural backgrounds to understand each other inside a certain culture,they need a space to obtain comprehension and consensus in a way of translation andnegotiation.”[44]And this space is called the Third Space. Actually it is a kind of interstitialspace.
