Conclusion
“Cultural identity is seen as a kind of unique and inherent characteristic owned by acertain nation. National culture is neither unified nor belongs to otherness, and the mixedobject can produce new significance in a third space.”[59]The characters in Jose’s works havedouble or multiple cultural backgrounds and pursue their own space in the hybridity ofSino-Australian culture. They are new variant in the two culture’s hybridity and are givendifferent endings by the author because of their different educational backgrounds andpersonal experiences.In the novel Avenue of Eternal Peace, Willy visited several cities and villages and got anaccess to various kinds of Chinese people, obtaining a much clearer knowledge andunderstanding about China. Because of different cultural and educational background and thecertain current social and historical situation, Wally has not understood the mysterythoroughly that China presents from beginning to end, and neither has he got the magicalmethod of curing cancer from process Xu. But to a large extend, his journey to China relieveshis pain of losing his wife, enriching and improving his knowledge about China and his ownspirit, and most importantly, constructing his new cultural identity in hybridity.And in the novel The Red Thread, Australian artist Ruth came to China with a stronginterest about Chinese culture and encountered her lover Shen. Through the pain of illness andthe cure by Chinese medicine, she got a much clearer understanding about herself andconstructed her new cultural identity in hybridity.This paper uses the concepts hybridity and the Third Space to interpret Nicholas Jose’stwo novels Avenue of Eternal Peace and The Red Thread to cater to the trend ofmulticulturalism of the world and find out what is behind this novel: the writer NicholasJose’s Chinese complex. His final writing appeal is to expand human beings’ cultural view inthe wave of globalization, try his best to promote the communication between differentcultures and then show his more mature cultural notion.
