n the Nanjing Gold Foil Group, some unknown terminology inevitably aroseconcerning cultural relics and craftsmanship.

Terminology of Cultural Relics

The reporter neglected terminology related to the architectural form inpreparation for scenic interpreting in the Chaotian Palace. Though the term was oncementioned in the Chinese introduction, it did not draw the reporter’s attention. Thus, when the speaker first mentioned this term, the reporter failed to catch the meaning inthe source language. In order to interpret the meaning of the term as much as possible, the reporter asked the speaker to repeat the term. Even if the speaker gave a simpleexplanation, the reporter still failed to interpret the exact meaning because she barelyunderstood this term.

2.2 Non-language Obstacles

The reporter also came across two non-language obstacles in this program. Firstly, the reporter did not have enough background knowledge of Chinese traditional culture;secondly, psychological pressure caused by various factors also had an adverse effecton the reporter’s performance.

2.2.1 The Lack of Background Knowledge of Chinese TraditionalCulture

Xie Tianzhen argued that “the history of human translation is divided into threeperiods: a period of inter-lingual oral communications, a period of written translationand a period of cultural translation. We are now in the third of these periods” (谢天振2004:7). Against such backdrop, translation or interpreting activities are no longer justsimple conversions between two languages, but cultural exchanges with target society, and an important human communication behavior as well. Translators or Interpretersactually become communicators or bridge-builders between two cultures. The reporterinterpreted lots of culture-related discourse, however, she sometimes failed to take theresponsibility as a bridge-builder according to the feedback from listeners’ expressionand their questions. During the review process, the reporter found that she couldactually understand the meaning of certain words, but was unable to take intoconsideration the cultural differences and convey the information clearly. Meanwhile, her lack of background knowledge of traditional Chinese culture, especially onancient history and poems hindered her from doing her best as well, so the reportermarked out these paragraphs and cited some of them as examples.

3.1.1 Getting Familiar with Terminology

A novice interpreter must get involved in interpreting activities in various fieldsat the beginning of his or her career, and be aware of the necessity of learning theterminology. Gile mentioned that “terminological information is necessary tounderstand more about source-language terms and to re-express referents inappropriate target-language terms” (2009:130), and terminology acquisition usuallytakes place before interpreting, wh论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
