Chapter II Literature Review

2.1 Ecological Classroom

First Educational Ecology was put forward by naturalist Henry David Thoreau in 1858 and laterdefined by German biologist Ernst Haeckel in 1866, ecology is a new field of science studying theoverall relationship between biology and its surroundings, be it organic or inorganic (Wu&Zhu,1998:2). It was not until in the early 20th century that basic principles of ecology had becomesystematic, been acknowledged by scholars and applied to studies on social science, motivating theestablishment of Human Ecology, Social Ecology, Ethical Ecology, Cultural Ecology, PSychologicalEcology and so on. In 1976, the dean of Columbia University Normal College, Lawrence, Creminproposed the concept of “educational ecology” in Public Education, suggesting that different kinds ofeducational factors constituted an ecosystem and the correlation within those educational factors aswell as their relationship with the whole society can be analyzed from systematic and associatedperspectives of ecology. As for Cremin(1976), educational ecology is a set of theories that guides theexploration of the interrelationship between different parts within educational system and relationsbetween education and its surroundings.

With the rapid development of educational ecology, researchers increasingly pay attention to itsstudies of micro-aspect, namely, the ecology of classroom, From the microscopic perspective ofeducational ecology, a classroom can be considered as a micro-ecosystem which is composed ofvarious ecological factors such as student, teacher, class environment, teaching material, teachingactivity, etc., and involves various links or interaction between those ecological subjects andecological environments of a classroom, equipping the classroom with dual traits of natural andcultural ecology (Huang&Chen, 2010:12).
