Executive Summary
The purpose of this report was to explore how to develop an appropriate performance appraisal system for employees of different types. This report first made use of ways of literature review to review relevant literatures on three types of performance appraisal system: objective management, Key Performance Indicator (KPI for short) and Balanced Scorecard Card (BSC for short). Then, it took BI-LO as an example to explore its lack of performance appraisal system, pointing out that there were the following problems existing in the company's performance appraisal system: a lack of pertinence, less scientific performance assessment indicators and a lack of feedback mechanism. In conclusion, this report presented recommendations: firstly, it should adopt Management by Objectives (MBO for short) towards part-time, casual staff and volunteers. Secondly, towards contractual staff, it should use the evaluation https://www.51lunwen.org/mbaessay/ system of KPI. Third, for traditional employees, it should make use BSC as its performance appraisal system. Fourthly, it should establish a feedback and communication mechanism.

1.0 Introduction
The purpose of performance appraisal is to promote the improvement of standards of corporate governance and comprehensive strength. It can ensure that employees’ individual ability can be improved to insure that their intelligence can play its role, so as to play the role of human resources fully (Matthew and Michael, 2010). But in reality, some companies’ performance appraisal systems fail to help them achieve these goals, which not only results in a waste of manpower and material resources, but also seriously hurts staff’s enthusiasm, bringing enterprises a great loss. This report first reviewed relevant theory of performance appraisal. Finally, on the basis of the literature review, it put forward recommendations for improvements.
