coursework Assignment
During the EE2G1 course you consider how major projects are conceived and
managed. This piece of coursework enables you to demonstrate your understanding of
this practice. Each lecture corresponds to a specific part of the coursework; you
should complete the coursework in between the lectures.
The coursework accounts for 60% of the EE2G1 course mark; plan to spend
approximately 50 hours (7 working days) on it. You are expected to show that you
clearly understand the work you have undertaken – explain your reasoning at all
stages and state all assumptions made. Ensure that you reference your work
appropriately using a recognised method (see www.i-cite.bham.ac.uk).
The front-page of your coursework submission should clearly state your name, e-mail
address and personal tutor. Each section of your coursework should be clearly
labelled with a title and section number. Each page should be numbered and a
contents page included.
Your coursework should be submitted in the lecture on Monday 1st December 2008
by 11am (Week 10). In accordance with University regulations, late submissions will
be penalized with a 5% penalty per day. If you have a valid reason for a late
submission please contact Dr Costas Constantinou with details of your mitigating
circumstances. The course lecturer is unable to provide any extensions. Plagiarised
pieces of work both from other students and previously published material will result
in a mark of zero.
A New New Street
The Gateway Project [1] is a £550m redevelopment of the Birmingham New Street
Station area. It includes a major refurbishment and rebuilding of the railway station
and two new skyscrapers. The Partners to the Gateway Project are Network Rail,
Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands and the West Midlands
Passenger Transport Executive (CENTRO). [2]
Your consultancy company has been given 7 days work by the Gateway Partners to
construct a draft outline quality plan for part of the development project. The quality
plan should cover one of the buildings/subsystems (e.g. the shops, towers, railway
station), components (e.g. public address system, escalators, security system, ticketing
kiosk, communication infrastructure, toilets…). Further examples are given below.
You are free to choose your subsystem or component from online research; here are
some suggested ideas for projects if you lack inspiration.
Buildings: Railway Entrance, Platforms, Towers
Network Infrastructure: IT/Communications, Waterways, Roads, Bridges, Railways,
Electricity, Drainage/Waste.
Components: Security and Sensing devices, Escalators, toilets,..
