ten represent in the people I write about” (Cohn 1977, p.46). This kind of conflict often appeared in Williams’ famous plays, including A Streetcar Named Desire. As Roger Boxill observed, “The central dramatic encounter between Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski, the faded “Southern belle” and the rough, poker-playing ex-soldier whose job keeps him on the road much of the time, is a re-enactment of the struggle between Miss Edwina and Cornelius to which Williams had been witness since childhood.”( Boxill 1987, p.16)
Feeling lonely and frustrated, Williams was indulged in writing and it might be the way for him to escape from the dreadful real world. “I am a compulsive writer, because what I am doing is creating imaginary worlds into which I can retreat from the real world because I am--- I’ve never made any kind of adjustment to the real world”(Corrigan 1997, p222).
During the winter of 1944–45, his "memory play" The Glass Menagerie was successfully produced in Chicago garnering good reviews. It moved to New York where it became an instant and enormous hit during its long Broadway run. Williams' use of his own familial relationships as inspiration for the play is impossible to miss.
The huge success of his next play, A Streetcar Named Desire, in 1947 secured his reputation as a great playwright. Although widely celebrated and increasingly wealthy, he was still restless and insecure in the grip of fears that he would not be able to duplicate his success. Between 1948 and 1959 seven of his plays were performed on Broadway: Summer and Smoke (1948), The Rose Tattoo (1951), Camino Real (1953), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), Orpheus Descending (1957), Garden District (1958), and Sweet Bird of Youth (1959). By 1959 he had earned two Pulitzer Prizes, three New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards, three Donaldson Awards, and a Tony Award. His work reached world-wide audiences in the early 1950s when The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire were made into motion pictures.
After the extraordinary success of the 1940s and 1950s, the 1960s and 1970s brought personal turmoil and theatrical failures. He suffered a lot from the death of his homosexual partner Frank Merlo. On February 25, 1983, Williams was found dead in his suite at the Elysee Hotel in New York at age 71. Most likely the truth is that to the end of his life Williams was as vibrant, creative and experimental a writer as ever.

1.2 Plot Review on A Streetcar Named Desire
Blanche DuBois, a schoolteacher from Laurel, Mississippi, arrived at the New Orleans apartment of her sister, Stella Kowalski, to seek a refuge. Stella, left the Belle Reve ten years ago, had married Stanley Kowalski, a rude man and a control freak. After Blanche’s unexpected appear and long-term residence, the conflict between Blanche and Stanley was intensified.
Mitch, Stanley’s co-worker and friend, was attracted by Blanche’s physical beauty and elegant temperance and proposed to her. Blanche was exited and happy to Mitch’s proposal and was waiting to marry him. But Stanley smashed all the Beautiful dreams of Blanche by revealing the disgraceful past of Blanche. After deserted by Mitch, Blanche was ruthlessly raped by Stanley. Moreover, she got mental breakdown because of Stella’s betrayal by ignoring and indulging Stanley’s violate on her.论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
