ognitive theory put forward byFauconnier and his colleagues, has attracted more and more attention from academic communityever since it has been proposed. Developing from conceptual metaphor theory and mental spacetheory, CBT is widely recognized as a powerful means of expounding dynamic on-line meaningconstruction. Since the process of conceptual blending turns out to play a central role in people'slearning, thinking and living, numerous scholars both in China and abroad have devotedthemselves to the developmental and application research of conceptual blending theory. In 1980, Metaphors We Live By, a masterpiece by Lakoff and Johnson, was published, inwhich the traditional and well-accepted views in western countries were challenged and it laterbrought about a revolution on the study of cognition and linguistics. Their study providesmotivation for the meaning construction of metaphor due to the research of the cross-domainmapping mechanism which considers metaphor as the structural mapping from the sourcedomain to the target domain. Following Lakoff and Johnson, American scholar Fauconnier andTurner in 1985 proposed mental space theory in their work: Mental Spaces: Aspects of MeaningConstruction in Natural Language (Fauconnier and Turner, 1985). With the emphasis upon thecognitive process, they believed that people constantly set up mental spaces while thinking andtalking and further amply discussed the specific processes of building, referring and identifyingmental spaces through sorts of linguistic forms in the on-line meaning construction of natural language.

2.2 Methodology
This part will present how and where the data used in the analysis is collected and then theresearch procedure is briefly introduced. According to Conceptual Blending Theory, it is suggested that to a large extent, theunderstanding of the meaning of discourses rely on the blending of mental spaces and the on-linemeaning construction. Consequently, this theory is the basis for scholars to further explorepeople's cognitive mechanism which provides a new perspective for the study of English riddles.In light of CBT, this thesis attempts to explore the relationship between CBT and theinterpretation of English descriptive riddles based on the following four research questions. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the internal mechanism of the interpretation ofEnglish descriptive riddles based on conceptual blending theory. He Gaoda's (2002) collection ofEnglish riddles, English Riddles 1000 compiled by Dong Meijun (1985), and Collis' 101American English Riddles (1996) and riddles from the internet are collected and studied.
