Chapter One Introduction

1.1 Background of the Research

With the rapid rise of China,Chinese culture is being accepted by the world in thecontext of going global.Subsequently,the study of Chinese literature in translation hasreceived increasing attention from scholars at home and abroad.However,the study ofChinese children’s literature translation has just started and is unappreciated by mainstreamscholars.According to the data from CNKI,papers on Chinese children’s translation studiespublished in core foreign language journals are few.This indicates that the current researchof children’s literature translation in China is still limited,the scope of research is not broadenough,and there are too few scholars engaged in this field of study,especially the lack ofresearch and attention from scholars with influence.Therefore,it is not difficult to say thatthere are still a lot of gaps in the translation of children’s literature that need to be studied byscholars.

Ye Shengtao is one of the pioneers and founders of modern Chinese children’sliterature.His fairy tales are masterpieces of content and form.The Scarecrow,a collectionof 23 short fairy tales,is his most representative children’s literature and is the first moderncollection of fairy tales in China.From then on,the era of imitating and adapting Englishfairy tales ended.The Scarecrow has become a milestone in the history of modern Chinesechildren’s literature because of its high intellectual and artistic achievements and its uniqueoriginality,literariness and modernity.Mr Lu Xun highly praised The Scarecrow,saying it“opened up a path for Chinese fairy tales”.Because of its importance,academic research onit has become increasingly intense.However,its English version has not received muchattention,let alone been studied from a cognitive perspective.

1.2 Significance of the Research

This study employs the Construal Theory as a theoretical basis to explore translators’cognitive deviation in the English translation of children’s literature.The significance of thisthesis lies in the following three aspects.

Theoretically,this study examines the deviations of the English translation of TheScarecrow from the perspective of new dimensions of the Construal Theory.This studyhelps to broaden and enrich the study of cognitive translation and is of theoretical value tothe Construal Theory and the study of the translation of children’s literature.

From the methodological point of view,this study adopts an interdisciplinary researchmethod,which integrates cognitive linguistics,stylistics,and translation deviation theory,which helps to analyze the translation quality of texts more comprehensively and provides aspecific reference for the research of children’s literature translation.
