1 Task Description
1.1 Background of the Task
Written by Rebecca Avern, the book Chinese Medicine for Childhood Anxietyand Depression was published in 2022 by Singing Dragon.Based on Rebecca’sextensive clinical experience as an acupuncture practitioner, the book makes thewisdom of Chinese medicine accessible to parents and practitioners.
It is commonly believed that childhood is carefree and worry-free,and onlyadults suffer from mental illness. However, massive new studies have found thatanxiety and depression are also common mental illnesses in children and adolescents, which will exert a serious influence on their physical and mental health. These mentalillnesses can affect the social skills of children and adolescents in adulthood,as wellas their ability to re-educate and work.
As globalization accelerates, communication between different countries isbecoming more frequent and academic exchanges are also increasing, bringing moredemands for translation. However, due to the differences between English andChinese, translators will inevitably encounter some problems in the translation process. For instance, inanimate subjects are widely used in English, especially informal written language, for the reason that western people focus more on science andthe objective world. In this way, native English speakers tend to avoid theemployment of personal subjects such as“I”,“we”and“you”.In contrast,Chinesepeople pay more attention to the subjectivity of human beings in ideology,so animatenouns usually act as the subject of a sentence in Chinese.Because of differentmindsets, the translation of English inanimate subjects is difficult for translators. As aresult, the translator decides to study how to translate inanimate subjects in thepopular science texts.
1.2 Brief Introduction to the Text
The author of the selected book,Rebecca Avern,an acupuncture practitioner, hasbeen practicing for many years and has extensive clinical experience. With acomprehensive understanding of the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine,Rebecca wants to share the magic of traditional Chinese medicine with more readersthrough her own words,so as to help readers take care of their children correctly andmake the future brighter for all children.Published in 2021,Chinese Medicine forChildhood Anxiety and Depression is a popular science text on how traditionalChinese Medicine views childhood anxiety and depression. The author discusses thecauses and manifestations of these two mental illnesses, anxiety and depression, fromsome traditional Chinese medicine’s perspectives, such as Yin Yang,Five Elements,Shen and Jing, and gives some suggestions to guide parents and medical practitionersto support the growth and development of children.
The language of the book is plain, simple and easy to understand, which is quitesuitable for readers without knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine to read andlearn. However, some professional terms and expressions of traditional Chinesemedicine are also contained, thus requesting the translator to consultant some TCMmaterials before translation.
