(Leki & Carson, 1994; Jordan, 1997)and instructors (Santos, 1988). Leki & Carson (1994) investigated 128 ESL students'the perception of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) writing course and found “thelargest percentage responses indicate a desire for more language skills" (R 88),particularly for vocabulary. This conclusion is confirmed by the survey of Jordan (1997)conducted among overseas postgraduates in UK, their central problem in writing isneither style nor grammar, but vocabulary. Learners' concern is not groundless, as thestudy of Santos (1988), done among 178 professors at the University of California afterthey had assessed two compositions written by a Chinese and a Korean,suggestsprofessors reckon lexical errors as the most serious.
In this paper, the author will use empirical and quantitative method basing onCLEC to analyze the relationship between lexical diversity and the quality of writing.At the very beginning, in the first chapter, the author generally introduces thebackground information about corpus such as its definition, characteristics, anddevelopments and so on,and especially introduces CLEC, because the statistics aregathered from CLEC in this research. Chapter Two elaborates research methodologyand concrete procedure of design through a sample, which helps to understand. ChapterThree and Chapter Four focus on the results and discussion, and analyzes the reasonswhy the results are favorable or against previous studies. Moreover,explain the reasonwhy some coefficients are not high. Finally, come up to the suggestions of writinginstruction in colleges or universities. Chapter Six is a summary and conclusion of thewhole thesis. The last part is bibliography.


Chapter TwoA REVIEW OF RELEVANT LITERATURE


2.1 Corpus: Its Past and Present
The word “corpus’’ originated from Latin, which means “a collection of writtentexts". Its plural form is corpora or corpuses. Corpus is “a collection of materials forlanguage applications, selected and sorted according to definite linguistics criteria, to beused as a sample of a language" (Sinclair, 1986:185-203), or “a large text database builtfor a specific purpose, basing on a clear criterion" (Atkins et al.,1992:1-16). Accordingto Renouf, a corpus is “a text database for linguistic study, formed by a large number ofwritten or spoken words, stored and processed by computer" (Renouf, 1987:1).Corpus has the following basic characteristics: 1) The design and construction ofcorpus is under the guidance of the principles of systematic and theoretical linguistics.The development of corpus has clear and specific researching objectives. 2) Thecomposition and sampling of corpus is collected by a random sampling method inaccordance with clear principles of linguistics rather than simple accumulation of thecorpus. 3) As samples of natural language, corpus must be representative. 4) Languagematerials of corpus are stored in the form of electronic text and processed automaticallyby computer.
Types of corpus can be divided according to the following levels: 1). According tolanguage types, it can be divided into monolingual corpus, bilingual corpus andmultilingual corpus. 2). According to language channel, it can be divided into writtenlanguage corpus and spoken language corpus. 3).
