English writing.
Both home and abroad, some researchers found expressive vocabulary, namelyproductive vocabulary, bears the direct impact on the English writing quality. Thegreater the productive vocabulary is, the higher the score of a composition is. But someresearchers' conclusion is that vocabulary level has a certain influence on quality ofwriting, but the effect is very small, even no influence. They found that the effects oflexical competence on writing quality are not obvious.In order to get his own answer, the author researched on the relationship betweenproficiency of productive vocabulary and quality of English writing. This thesisselected one 173 CET 4 compositions and 153 CET 6 compositions randomly fromCLEC. Drawing on the LFP method of Laufer and Nation (1995), the author tookadvantage of the software RANGE of LFP to calculatenumbers and ratios of K1 words, K2 words, complex words,misspellings, and alsoTTR of each selected composition respectively. Finally, SPSS 18.0 was used to conductdescriptive statistic analysis, independent sample ^-test and correlated statistic analysis.
After analysis, this paper found that: Firstly, both CET 4 and CET 6 compositionsoverused K1 words, showing an oral style. Secondly,proficiency of productivevocabulary is closely correlated to the quality of writing, especially for college studentswho take part in CET 4 and CET 6. The results show that for the compositions of CET4, scores represent obviously positive correlation with total number of a compositionand ratio of K1 words, remarkably negative correlation with the ratios of misspellingsand K2 words, are irrelevant with TTR and ratio of complex words. However, theresults of CET 6 are somewhat different. The scores of compositions of CET 6 take onsignificantly positive correlation with TTR and the ratio of K2 words, obviouslynegative correlation with the ratio of misspellings, no relation with total number, ratiosof K1 words and complex words.
Actually, throughout various studies it can be concluded that the quality of acomposition is affected by a series of internal and external factors together. Internalfactors include vocabulary level, grammar skills, writing strategies, proficiency andreading ability of second language, the writing level of native language, encyclopediaknowledge etc. External factors involve the article type, topic familiarity, writingenvironments and conditions and so on. All in all, proficiency of productive vocabularyas an important part of the internal factors, with other factors together, at last eitherdirectly or indirectly affect the quality of writing, but only the proficiency of productivevocabulary itself is not sufficient to completely determine the quality of a composition.
