Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
随着世界全球化的加速,英语,作为一个基本的和强大的通信手段,在世界之窗宽的通信覆盖各个领域起着越来越明显和突出的作用。学习英语已经成为中国各地的业内总的趋势。在英语学习的过程中有四种基本技能。写作,作为学生的生产技能和沟通的一种方式之一,在英语学习和教学中起着重要的作用。正如Greenia(1992)指出,第二语言写作可能是有用的语言学习,促进学生的思维能力(吴鸿运,2004)。此外,文秋芳(1996)认为,英语写作能力的要求将成为合格的人在21世纪的重要标准之一。因此,写英文的能力,被认为是在社会和学校为一个重要objectiveof外语教学和学习。然而,英语写作教学的现状远远不能令人满意。学生的写作表现相对较差。据统计,大学英语四级的写作部分学生的平均分一直徘徊在5到7(总得分是15)(2004)都哀鸿,立森(2000)也指出,大学英语测试考生,写作一直是薄弱环节之间的五个基本语言技能(听,说,读,写,译)
With the acceleration of world globalization, English, as a basic and powerfulmeans of communication, plays a more and more evident and prominent role in theworld wide communication covering various fields. Learning English has become ageneral trend throughout China. There are four basic skills in the process of Englishlearning. Writing, as one of students’ productive skills and a way of communication,plays an important part in English learning and teaching. Just as Greenia (1992) statesthat second language writing could be helpful to language learning and promotestudents’ thinking ability (Wu Hongyun, 2004). Moreover, Wen Qiufang (1996)maintained that a requirement of English writing ability would become one of theimportant criteria for qualified person in the 21st century. As a result, the ability towrite in English is considered in society and in the schools as an important objectiveof foreign language teaching and learning. However, the present situation of Englishwriting teaching is far from satisfactory. Students’ writing performances are relativelypoor. According to statistics, students’ average points of the writing part in CET 4have always been wandering between 5 to 7 (the total score is 15) (Du Aihong, 2004).Li Sen (2000) also pointed out that for College English test takers, writing has alwaysbeen the weakest part among the five basic language skills (listening, speaking,reading, writing, translation)
According to Teaching Requirements for the Course of College English, we learnthat one of the purposes of College English teaching is to foster the students’comprehensive ability to communicate with others in their future career and socialinteractions in English, not only in spoken form but also in written one. To achieve theabove aims, we should and must pay much attention to English as a Foreign Language(EFL) teaching. Vocabulary teaching plays an important role in EFL teaching. It is an accepted fact that vocabulary is the most essential element in language processing.Just as Willkins (1972:11), one of the linguists to suggest an important role ofvocabulary, asserts: “Without grammar very little can be conveyed, withoutvocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” Vocabulary is crucial to language acquisitionand is the fundamental element of English writing. Many scholars have studied thevocabulary uses in learners’ writing. And some researches have shown thatvocabulary is regarded by learners as the most important yet the most problematicelement in writing (Zhang Xiaolan, 2004). Moreover, most published studies indicatethat lexical errors are the most commonly committed errors. Grauberg (1971)examined the errors of some advanced learners of German with MT English and drawthe conclusion “the preponderance of lexical errors”, because 102 lexical errors wereidentified out of 193 recorded errors, which occupied 53% (James, 2001).
