Chapter 1 Introduction


英语应力的收购一直受到语言学家和第二语言习得研究人员的调查,由于其重要性在类似母语口音,事实上,它在成功沟通的过程中扮演一个重要的角色。通常情况下,成人学习者的第二语言(L2)或外语学习者的谁来自非预应力语言背景的说,没有任何口音的语言有困难,即使他们有据悉,沿着时间的语言。具有很高的阅读和写作能力的学习者仍显示有机会上第二语言沟通的问题。本章介绍了后台运行,当前研究的目的和意义。研究的问题也给出了本章。The acquisition of English stress has been a subject of inquiry for linguists andsecond language acquisition researchers, due to its importance in the native-like accentand to the fact that it plays a significant role in successful process of communication.Usually, adult learners of a second language (L2) or foreign language learnerswho come from a non-stressed language background are shown to have difficulty inspeaking that language without any accent, even if they have learnt that language for along time. Learners who have high proficiency in reading and writing are still shown tohave problems in communicating in second language. This chapter describes thebackground, purpose and significance of the current study. Research questions also aregiven in this chapter.


1.0 Background of the Current Study

Some researches revealthat L2 learners may rely heavily on their native strategy in the process of learningstress placement in L2, so that they may place stress in a position where it would notfall in either the native or in the second language (Archibald 1993). That is to say, theproduction of L2 may be disturbed by the sound system or the phonetic features of thenative or first language (Cheng, 1987).In general, in the perception and production of L2, the interference from L1 canoccur at two levels: segmental and suprasegmental level (Shen, 1990).
The number andperhaps the severity of segmental misarticulations can directly lead to the increase ofthe degree of perceived foreign accent. The discrepancy of the phonetic norms for theimplementation of stress and emphasis between L1 and L2 may also have something todo with the degree of an accent. Most previous studies have been conducted at thesegmental level, while many recent studies indicate that suprasegmental features havestronger effect than segmental features on the judgment of speaking proficiency,though both are said to have significant influence on it. Palmer (1976) did a researchon French learners of English and found that in their production of English, comprehensibility was more closely related with suprasegmental errors than withsegmental ones. Chinese learners of English were observed to have same results. In anearlier study of Anderson-Hsieh and Koeher (1988), three male Chinese speakers’production of English was investigated. The production of them was compared at threelevels: segmentals, syllable structure and prosody.
