2.2 Defining Key Terms
The present study focused on the use of the adjective patterns. The investigationof the adjective patterns entailed a good understanding of the key terms involved inthe present study. The key terms that were defined in the following sections includedwhat adjective patterns the present study investigated and what evaluative meaningsreferred to.
2.2.1 The Adjective Patterns
The adjective patterns investigated in the present study consist of four kinds ofpatterns, i.e. the adjective followed by a to-infinitive clause (ADJ to-inf), the adjectivefollowed by a that-clause (ADJ that), the adjective followed by a finite wh-clause(ADJ wh), and the adjective followed by an “-ing” clause (ADJ -ing), each with itssubdivisions. In other words, these four patterns could be dubbed the adjectivepatterns followed by a clause. The notion of a pattern is developed by Hunston and Francis and they argue that“a pattern can be identified if a combination of words occurs relatively frequently, if itis dependent on a particular word choice, and if there is a clear meaning associatedwith it” (Hunston & Francis, 1999: 38). In so doing, they distinguish what a pattern isfrom what a pattern is not. The pattern of a word can be defined as all the words andstructures which are regularly associated with the word and which contribute to itsmeaning. On the other side of the coin, a pattern can be seen to be associated with avariety of different words and the words which share a pattern can be groupedtogether according to their meanings.Using significance testing, Francis et al. (1996; 1998) conduct an investigationinto the Bank of English (BoE) and identify five verb patterns, two noun patterns, andtwo adjective patterns, each with further subdivisions. Since the focus of the presentstudy is not on verb patterns or on noun patterns, the researcher will come direct to thetwo adjective patterns. One of the adjective patterns is referred to as the patterns ofadjectives followed by a clause (the focus of the present study); the other is thepatterns of adjectives by a prepositional phrase introduced by a wide range ofprepositions.
