摘要:This section contains two parts. One is about research questions; another is theresearch methodology. To begin with, the research questions are discussed. Based onthe objectives of the present study, this thesis tries to answer the following questions.
This chapter presents some previous studies on nouns and evaluative nouns. Itcontains three parts. The first part is the brief introduction of English nouns, includingthe definitions and classifications of nouns. The second part is previous studies onnouns. The third part is about previous studies on evaluative nouns. The last part ofthis chapter is the achievements and limitations of the previous studies. To begin with, the brief introduction of English nouns is discussed in Section 2.1.
2.1 Brief Introduction of English Nouns
In linguistics, a noun is a member of a large, open lexical category whosemembers can occur as the main word in the subject of a clause, the object of a verb, orthe object of a preposition. This section comprises two parts, which are definitionsand classifications of English nouns
2.1.1 Definitions of English Nouns
A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, or idea. Whatever exists, we assume, can be named, and that name is a noun. Lexical categories are defined in terms of howtheir members combine with other kinds of expressions. The syntactic rules for nounsdiffer from language to language. In English, nouns may be defined as those wordswhich can occur with articles and attributive adjectives and can function as the headof noun phrase. In traditional English grammar, the noun is one of the eight parts ofspeech. In traditional school grammars, one often encounters the definition of nounsthat they are all and only those expressions that refer to a person, place, thing, event, substance, quality, quantity, or idea, etc. This is a semantic definition. It has beencriticized by contemporary linguists as being uninformative. Contemporary linguistsgenerally agree that one cannot successfully define nouns in terms of what sort ofobject in the world they refer to or signify. Part of the conundrum is that the definitionmakes use of relatively general nouns (thing, phenomenon, event, etc.) to define whatnouns are.
