And the structure of a text is among grammatical items which are judgedas cohesive ties. In Cohesion in English, Halliday and Hasan divided cohesion into twodifferent categories which are shown as follows:grammatical cohesion and lexicalcohesion. Chapter 4 Results and Discussion

Aimed at studying lexical cohesive devices in English major students’compositions,the research mainly discusses the lexical cohesion from three aspects:the relationshipbetween lexical cohesion, the relationship between lexical cohesion and other cohesionused in English composition, and the relationship between lexical cohesion and errorsmade by English major students. After giving a detail introduction of the relevanttheories and theories concerning lexical cohesion, and a detailed interpretation ofmethodology of the study, this chapter will discuss the features of lexical cohesivedevices in English major students’ writings and analyze the data about the mentionedquestions in the above part.

4. 1 General Distribution and Discussion of Six Subtypes of Lexical Cohesion in Samples

As mentioned in chapter three, the study analyzes the word frequency of the targetcorpus by set another larger corpus as the comparing target, and the results are showingas follows:From the above table, we can clearly see that the top 15 words that belongs to open-setwords are mainly related to the words appearing in the topic, such as letter, writing,phones and telephone, ect.In chapter three, it also be mentioned that the study regards the writing genre,topic of the composition and the length as the controlled variables, 20 high-scorecompositions and 20 low-score writings are sampled.
