本文是一篇高中英语论文,基于少数民族高中生英语课堂沉默现状和归因地综合分析,本研究提出相关策略建议以期改善这种现象。包括:改善提问策略,组织多样活动,重视文化连结以及转变教学理念。希望通过这些策略地应用,少数民族地区高中生英语课堂的沉默现象能够好转。
Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background Information
It is well-known that English is a language tool for people to have interaction and communication with each other. The responsibilities of an English teacher are not only to impart rudimentary language knowledge like vocabulary and grammar, helping learners get good grades in various examinations, but of more consequence to help students improve their communicative competences with these knowledge. In our country, due to the environmental limitation, classroom has become the vital venue for students to communicate with others in English. Therefore, it is beneficial to enhance English teaching and learning by improving students’ engagement in English class, which provides them with opportunities to put the acquired language into practice, making it turn to output and having a good mastery. As Swain (1985) mentioned, output is an important condition for learners to acquire foreign language. Although comprehensible input is necessary, output shows more significance for learners’expectation of accurate and fluent English.
As one of the core competences of English discipline, language ability is highlighted for its value in General Senior High School Curriculum Standards: English (2020 Edition), which indicates that “the important mission of language instruction is to make students think and have authentic communication by using what they have learnt in language class.” Speaking is a basic language skill for English learners to have a good command because of its fundamental functions and importance in the facilitation of cultural communication and thinking quality. Learners’ active and positive oral participation in class is a powerful means to make great progress in English level on one side, to nurture well-rounded students as the new curriculum required on the other.
1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
The issue of classroom silence is so widespread that appeals more and more scholars and teachers in various disciplines, English in particular. Most of existing studies concentrate on the causes and strategies of classroom silence with more undergraduates and some high school students as research subjects, while there is a fairly shortage of research on high school students in the minority area. It is what this research going to do, investigating the status quo of English classroom silence in such area. This study is therefore of theoretical significance for the complement and in-depth of accomplishment of current studies, which provides some orientation for other researchers to be aware of English education facing the ethnic groups.
Besides, this study is about to know the scale of learners’ English classroom silence and to discover factors that have impact on it. Several suggestions that are able to make a difference will be given in the end. The results of it can have some practical values. First of all, it will help teachers reexamine their teaching beliefs, find out teaching deficiencies, transform teaching approaches, and develop their professionalism to create more efficient classes.
