The Trinidad Carnival arising from colonial rule represents enslaved people’s yearning and longing for freedom. It is a way for Trinidadians to show their culture and seek a sense of national belonging. However, the Trinidad Carnival has become the cultural consumption commodity for tourists from America and European developed countries to satisfy their curiosity after Trinidad obtained political independence. The cultural consumption of the Trinidad Carnival causes damage to Trinidad culture. The cultural expression of Trinidadians is not to show cultural confidence but to win the favor of imperial tourists. When culture is used to attract customers, it will be controlled. Through mastering Trinidad culture, Western imperialist countries can realize control over Trinidad.

Cultural consumption refers to people’s behavior to consume spiritual and cultural products and services to satisfy their spiritual and cultural life. “In other words, cultural consumption refers to the possession, appreciation, enjoyment and use of spiritual and cultural products and services” (Qin, 2011: 209). Cultural consumption is based on material consumption. The development of social productive forces restricts the demand for cultural consumption.

After the Second World War, the world economy began to recover. The new scientific and technological revolution has extensively promoted the development of productivity, and material production has significantly prospered. Wealthy classes are emerging in the developed European countries and the United States, whose material needs have been well satisfied. When people’s basic needs are met, they will pursue higher-level needs such as physical and mental health, spiritual enrichment, and self-improvement. The consumption focus is constantly shifting to the field of spiritual culture. Cultural consumption begins to emerge.

II. “Trinidadian Mass Media” and the Imperial Cultural Hegemony

The mass media plays an essential role in the global cultural hegemony of America. Through the mass media, America exports the ideology based on American values to the world and tries to make the thoughts serving American interests occupy other countries’ people’s minds. In this way, America can realize its dominant position in the global field. Trinidad is one of the victims of American Cultural Hegemony. Influenced by the values and ideas contained in mass media, Trinidadians generally admit the superiority of America, accept American ideology and behaviors, and gradually move closer to America. Consequently, Trinidad is controlled by America again. Besides, by controlling Trinidad’s ideology, America has opened up its market in the Third World, thus gaining economic benefits.

Cultural Hegemony essentially refers to the ruling class’s ideological leadership over the ruled class. The ruling class can realize its stable dominance over the ruled class by controlling the ideology. Meanwhile, the ruled class will accept the values and outlook of the ruling class and consciously agree with the dominance.
