1.1 Introduction to Celeste Ng and Everything I Never Told You

As a new generation of Chinese-American writer,Celeste Ng became a dazzling starwhen she first entered the literary world.The novel Everything I Never Told You has wonmany awards since it is published in 2014.In this part,this thesis will give a furtherintroduction to Celeste Ng and Everything I Never Told You.

1.1.1 Introduction to Celeste Ng

Celeste Ng was born in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania in 1981.She is a contemporaryChinese-American writer and a second-generation immigrant from Hong Kong.Her parentsemigrated to the United States in the 1960s.Her father,a physicist at NASA’s Glenn ResearchCenter,died in 2004.Her mother taught chemistry at Cleveland State University.Because ofher own immigration experience,Celeste Ng could deeply feel the hybrid phenomenon ofAmerican society and culture at that time.Therefore,instead of following her parents to studyscience knowledge,she decided to engage in literary writing and recounted social phenomena.

1.2 Literature Review

Everything I Never Told You has caused a sensation in the literary world since its release.It was translated into Chinese by Sun Lu in 2015 and was favored by many scholars.Manyscholars study the novel from different angles.In this part,the research status of the novel athome and abroad will be summarized.

1.2.1 Studies Abroad

Since Everything I Never Told You was published in 2014,readers and researchers athome and abroad have been interested in it.However,the study on this novel by foreignscholars is less than that at home.And most of the studies on it are journals,book reviews andso on,and there are few dissertations.Foreign studies on Everything I Never Told You aremainly in the following aspects:marginal identity crisis,identity construction,psychoanalysis,narrative strategies and so on.In addition,there are also some interviews about writer CelesteNg and her debut novel Everything I Never Told You at abroad.Next,the author will brieflysummarize the research status of Everything I Never Told You by foreign scholars.
