Abstract

This paper reconsiders American individualism in the background of Wenchuan earthquake, especially after the happening of Runner-Fan’s event. In Wenchuan earthquake, some teachers were wounded or even died gloriously for saving their students’ lives. And some Chinese think if such a horrible earthquake happened in the United States, the moving stories about teachers couldn’t have happened, for Americans worship individualism. It is true that there’s a different recognition between Chinese and American people towards individualism. Many Chinese misunderstand individualism as the extreme egoism and egocentricity when it is first brought into China. In fact, individualism pays special attention to democracy and equality, and the true and typical feature of individualism is the advocacy of individual rights and freedom. As a result, Fan Meizhong, the runner-teacher, feels so sad for he wasn’t born in America where he proclaims is full of democracy and freedom. This thesis aims to analyze the essential connotation of American individualism and give an objective judge to Runner-Fan’s escape behavior. As the core value orientation in America, individualism has its positive significance which makes America develop to be a powerful country in just 200 years. The thesis writer hopes that Chinese people could have a better understanding and form a fair estimation of the American individualism.

摘要

本文在汶川地震的背景条件下,尤其是在“范跑跑”事件发生后重新探讨了美国个人主义。在汶川地震中, 许许多多的人民教师为了救自己学生的性命而光荣牺牲了。许多人认为，如果这样大的地震发生在美国，那些老师舍身救学生的感人故事就不可能发生, 原因是美国人崇尚个人主义。中国人和美国人对个人主义的认知存在差异，当个人主义被引进中国后，许多中国人将个人主义错误的理解为极端自我主义和利己主义。事实上，个人主义只是强调民主和平等，而个人主义的本质特征在于对人权和人身自由的崇尚。正因为如此，逃跑教师——范美忠才会为自己没有生活在美国，他自己称之为“充满民主自由”的国家而痛苦不堪。本文的写作目的在于阐述分析美国个人主义的本质含义，以期待重新审视美国个人主义，并给予公正的评价。
