1.2 Reasons for choosing this topic选择主题的理由
The research on Hui Alley Pidgin English is of great theoretical importance. Firstof all, its related studies have become an attractive topic. The problem of how WorldEnglishes has evolved has aroused great interest (Kachru 1986; Kachni & Nelson 2006;McArthur 2001; Bolton 1994; Schneider 1997: Quirk 1985: Kirkpatrick 2007; Giddens21990; Yano 2001; Salverda 2002; Crystal 1988). Secondly, varieties of English havebeen another spotlight in this field (Bolton 2002; Davis 2006; Richard 1975; McArthur2001; Szmrecsanyi & Kortmann 2009), for example, Hong Kong English (Kirkpatrick2007; Chan 2000), China English (Hu 2004; Kirkpatrick & Xu 2002), SingaporeEnglish (Bao 2006; Gupta 1994; Lim 2004). Furthermore, the study of Pidgin andCreoles (Ishtla 2000; Sebba 1997; Jeff 2008) has emerged, for example, Hawaii CreoleEnglish (Stanley 1969; Jeff 2000); Cameroon English Pidgin (Sala 2009; Bellama &Yuciom 1983). Spontaneous Multilingualism in African Town in Guang Zhou (Han2011).According to Kachru (1986), sociolinguistic context and acculturation is a newperspective of analyzing the language instead of classroom learning. However, afterabout 25 years, there arc still not many studies utilizing this method. Han (2011) andSzmrecsanyi & Kortmann (2009) currently present some part of findings. Han (2011)presents mainly findings on socioeconomic relations of multilingualism underglobalization, and Szmrecsanyi & Kortmann (2009) analyze the morphosyntax ofvarieties of English worldwide from a cross-sectional perspective. It seems no one hassynthesized the linguistic feature, cultural feature and deictic gesture in the study ofnatural language via a longitudinal study.Another striking point here is that Defective Interaction Theory (PersonalCommunication: Zhang 2011) would be applied in this study to analyze the ForeignerTalk in Hui Alley Pidgin. Actually. Freed (1981)、Newport (1976), Hatch, Peck, andWagner-Gough (1979), Huang (1970)‘ Derwing (1989) and Long (1980) have donesome comparison works with Caretaker Talk/Mothercse and they have analyzed thefeatures relating lo the consideration of ungrammatical input modification,grammatical input modification, interactional modification and discourse management.Meanwhile, Motherese has also attracted researcher's attention (Snow and Ferguson1977; Waters on and Snow 1978: Harkness 1977; Crago 1992; Krashen 1980),and theirfindings reflect that caretakers address to children in a well-adapted way to beconsistent with the children's linguistic ability. Furthermore, Teacher Talk is also arelevant topic done by Hakansson (1986), Flanigan (1991), Long and Crookes (1987),and White (1992) and they study it from the perspective of amount of talk, functionaldistribution, rate of speech and so on. Here the question arises: what are the linguisticfeatures of Foreigner Talk (international tourists in Hui Alley) compared withMotherese and Teacher Talk?Hui Alley Pidgin English is very unique in that it is a form of English usedbetween international tourists and Muslim shop owners primarily for business purposes.It is the English acquired or learned naturally by Muslim-ethnic community in theLI-Chinese environment. Therefore, it is different not only from the Englishacquired naturally by Chinese-speaking immigrants in an English environment, butalso from the English learned in classroom settings in China.
