A better understanding andexplanation of The Expo and its significance, to the world, can usher people in arationality in checking and exploring individual’s responsibility and mission.Therefore, it is of necessity to put Wen’s speech on this event to a positive analysis inthe framework of the Appraisal Theory. The Appraisal Theory mainly analyzes theattitude, viewpoint, stand revealed in the appraisal resources. Compared with criticaldiscourse analysis, positive discourse analysis can be considered as supplementaryperspective to analyze discourse. Positive discourse analysis takes a text as a socialpractice which bears the socially constructional function. It advocates rather a positivereform and peaceful solution to social issues than an inappropriate exaggeration ofideology or power relationship revealed in the discourse.

1.2 The Research Questions and the Significance of this Study研究的问题和意义
Many linguists and scholars have carried out significant researches on theAppraisal Theory and their application. Some deal with a positive discourse analysisof a political speech in the framework of the Appraisal Theory has been tried, someget involved in a critical discourse analysis of a political speech combined withHalliday’s SFG or Fairclough’s three-dimensional model, but there is no researchconducted on a positive discourse analysis of a political speech in the framework ofthe Appraisal Theory, meanwhile, it is supplemented with the Fairclough’sthree-dimensional model to reassert the function of the appraisal resources in apolitical speech. This thesis is to make an attempt in this aspect.This thesis is composed with the theoretical and practical aim: to propose acomplementary constructive perspective on discourse analysis of Wen Jiabao’sspeech to find out the appraisal resources and their interpersonal meanings. Thusthe thesisi aims to explore another aspect of political speech for supplementingthe mainstream deconstructive critical standpoint (CDA) of political speech; Thethesis also employs Fairclough’s three-dimensional model for PDA in order toand to testify the applicability of Appraisal theory and prove that it can be usedfor PDA. This thesis tends to analyze the appraisal resources in Wen Jiabao’sspeech with the framework of Martin's Appraisal theory from a positiveperspective and reveal the interpersonal function of a discourse as a socialpractice in its social background. Related to the objectives, there are four researchquestions in the thesis:a) What is the attitudinal resources in the speechless?b) What is the engagement resources in the speech?c) What is the graduation resources in the speech?d) Does the blending theory with Fairclough’s three-dimensional modelcontribute to the rationality and feasibility of discourse analysis?

1.3 Organization of the thesis论文结构
The thesis falls into six chapers:Chapter 1 is an introduction to concerned information of the whole thesis.
