loadedwords. Many terms are used to describe this kind of words, such as “文俗负载词”“文化负载词” “文化特有词” “文化空缺词” “国俗语义” in Chinese and"culture-loaded words,,,"culturally conditioned words” "culture-specific terms""culture-bound terms" "culturally loaded terms" in English. In this thesis, the authorprefers to use the "culture-loaded words" and “文化负载词”.Jin Huikang once wrote that culture-loaded word is a common phenomenon, sinceit exists in every language. They represent the value system, life styles, social habitsof a certain nation or culture.(金惠康,2003:90) This shows one of the characteristicsof culture-loaded words,i.e. every culture has its own culture-loaded words. What'smore, culture-loaded words have unique connotations under the certain culturalbackground. Last but not least, culture-loaded words have both conceptual andcultural meanings or connotations. Such as ‘‘白目艮JL各良”,‘‘老了” ‘‘王八蛋”,whencomes to these words, the western readers can only understand their conceptualmeanings "white-eye wolf “ being old" and “ the egg of a turtle" . They can't knowthe cultural meanings of them since they don't have the relative cultural background. In Chinese culture, “ 白目艮 J L各良” refers to a person who is evil and returns kindnesswith ingratitude,“老了” is a euphemistic way to express death, “王乂、蛋”is acommon term to curse somebody. All of these are not exist in the Western culture.Wang Zuoliang, a famous Chinese scholar holds that words have conceptualmeanings but not every word has cultural connotation.(王佐良,2000:14) “The coresof culture-loaded words are the connotations they carry."(胡文f中,1990:80) FangMengzhi puts forward that those words whose cultural meanings have no equivalentsin other languages are culture-loaded words.(方梦之、包昂,2004: 10)Compared with cultural meaning or connotation, conceptual meaning is moreconcrete and mostly related to the outside world. While cultural meaning is abstract,it is unique to one certain culture and hard to find the counterpart in another culture. So in the translation of culture-loaded words, the key point is to correctly transmit thecultural meanings to target readers. In other words, translators should transplant thecultural background into the brain of target readers.Mona Baker has made thorough researches on culture-loaded words. In his eyes,culture-loaded words may be relative to religious, geographical or social elements(Mona Baker,2000:89) Some American linguists also use “vocabulary bank" or"semantic words" for them. Louis B. Salomon,a famous American scholar prefers todefine such words or terms as "culture specific". Some scholars also call these words“culturally conditioned words,,and "culture-bounded words".(崔雅萍,2002: 56-58)But when it comes to the translation process, most of the foreign scholars choose toapply Eugene A. Nida and Peter Newmark's thoughts about translation. In thetranslation of these words, their commonly applied techniques are foreignization anddomestication.
