Conclusion


The present study investigates the development trend of AN collocation in Englishmajors’ writing by different grades and systematically probe into the types of ANcollocational errors. Although great efforts have been made to perfect the study,limitations are still unavoidable.
Firstly, the samples are just selected from part of English majors in NUAA, so thisresearch should not claim to be universally applicable. The number of the participantsattending the present study is just limited to 120, so it might lack high universality. Andthe type of composition may have effect on the use of AN collocation. So a wider rangeof samples should be required and various compositions can be chosen to investigate.
Secondly, although the AN errors are divided into four groups, as we mentionedbefore, there are overlaps between these errors. We discuss the classification of everyerror over and over again and also consult many relevant resources, but the classificationmay still be so typical. So if a more scientific classification of errors can be used, theresults will be more systematic and objective.
Thirdly, we have little access to know teachers’ real teaching process and students’learning environment which contribute to communicative strategy-based errors andreduced errors. The interview conducted in this study may not take all the related factorsinto consideration, so the analysis of the causes that bring about AN collocational errorsmay not quite comprehensive or systematic.
At the end of the thesis, we attempt to give some suggestions to overcome thelimitations. Firstly, a wider and more geographically and demographically range ofsamples should be required to lead to a more convincing conclusion. Various compositions can be chosen to retrieve data. Secondly, AN collocational errors needmore convincing classification. And besides, causes of ANCE should be furtherdiscussed in a more systematic and objective way. At last, future researchers can findmore access to learners and investigate the communicative strategy-based errors andinduced errors. All these suggestions are supposed to have some theoretical andpedagogical significance for future researches.
