摘要:Some researchers agree that morphological awareness is a critical metalinguisticability that promotes to passage level reading recently. However, fewer studies regardedmorphological awareness as a key to understand the meaning of words.

ed with meaning andgrammatical function. Morphemes are basic building blocks of words in English.Generally, there are two sorts of words, monomorphemic words or simple words, such asbig, tree, and what; and multimorphemic words or complicated words, such as disffustful, talkative, and worthiness. A great number of English words contain more than onemorpheme, and these words can be broken down to a few morphemes that offer meaningas well as spelling and pronunciation. Linguistically,English words are also made up ofthree components, namely, prefix, stem, and suffix. Moreover, morphemes can also bedivided into two parts: free morpheme and bound morpheme. The difference between afree morpheme and a bound morpheme lies in that whether it can stand alone or not. There is a distinction between inflectional and derivational morphology. The formerone refers to the grammatical function of a word in sentences, and does not change itsclass. Taking the word helped for example, it is formed by the suffix -ed and the basehelp. Though it changes from present to past tense, changing the grammatical function, its class being a verb is unchanged. Derivations alter the meaning of new words frombase words, and it may differ in word class as well. For example, the word careful is made up of the derivational suffix -ful and free-standing base care, as a result, it turns toan adjective from a verb. To some extent, the meaning is not the same as before. Base onthis word careful, we can also change -ftil into -less, it is easy to find that the meaning istotally changed while the class remains adjective. Thus, inflectional and derivationalmorphemes conveying syntactic and semantic details can modify bound morphemes. Theformer one changes tense, person, and number of words while the latter one may changeclass.

2.2 Word level reading
Word level reading or word recognition, word identification, and word decoding, hasbeen a permanent issue in the studying field of reading acquisition of alphabetic languagesince the nativity of experimental psychology. Word reading plays a key role in readingfrom the studies of skilled readers and poor readers. It refers to the ability to spell wordsand to retrieve the meaning of words from mental lexicon (Rayner & Pollatsek, 1989;Hoover & Gough,1990). The former one regards to decoding, a transformation fromwritten literacy into phonological representation by grapheme-phoneme correspondencewhich is based on phonological awareness. While the latter one is a direct process thatidentifies words by sight.Word recognition process of a language has been proved to be shaped by the natureof the language. Basically, the various writing systems of the world's languages presentspoken language to written forms in three main methods: alphabetic orthographies mapphonemes, syllabic orthographies map syllables or units of multiple sounds; andlogographic or morphographic orthographies map words or morphemes, the smallest unitof meaning (Spencer, 1991). Word level reading, in essence, consists of two processes, process of printed and oral words.
