Chapter Four General Discussion


The main aims of this study are to tap into the development of Chinese adolescents'English morphological awareness and its contribution to word level reading in acomprehensive view. Specifically, we attempt to shed light on morphological awarenessfrom different levels by using three corresponding tasks, morphological discriminationtask, morphological identification task and morphological manipulation task and we alsoaim to obtain the tendency of morphological ability development during three grades. Theresults presented in the former chapter indicate that three aspects of morphologicalawareness don't develop coordinately, and morphological manipulation ability is the mostpowerful predictor on word recognition. Morphological identification does not play a roleas we supposed. It fails to account for the variance on word reading in any Theawareness of morphological discrimination can account for some variance for senior 2.Apart from that, both age and nonverbal ability somehow plays a role in the process.Nonverbal ability is correlated with other factors in Junior 3 but this correlationdisappears in Senior 1 and Senior 2.The following sections are to discuss our experimental findings in detail based onthe above experimental data.

Conclusion


To recapitulate, this study demonstrates a clear effect of Chinese teenagers' Englishmorphological awareness, and provides supporting evidence for its contribution to wordrecognition. Based on the results and discussion in the previous chapters, the followingconclusion can be drawn:Firstly, morphological awareness of Chinese learners contributes a lot to word levelreading. Morphological awareness can account for the variance of word reading abilityafter controlling nonverbal ability for Chinese English learners.Secondly, regarding to three levels of morphological awareness, morphologicalmanipulation ability is the most powerful predictor on word reading, and morphologicaldiscrimination ability emerges to be a predictor on word reading in Senior 2.Thirdly, the contribution of morphological awareness on word reading slightlydeclines with the growth of grade for Chinese English learners.This study supports a growing body of researches which highlight the value ofmorphological awareness to reading. The present study embodies one step towards themorphological measuring of Chinese English learners. However, further studies are stillneeded to validate the underlying constructs of English morphological awareness forChinese learners to help them orchestrate their metalinguistic skills in English reading.
