Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
English articles are the most frequently-used words in English discourse. The definitearticle “the” ranked as the most frequently-used word and the indefinite article “a”ranked number five (Master, 2002: 332). That is to say, English articles have a significanteffect on English expression. The English article system is also a sign which indicates thecompetence of native speakers. When they deal with them, they are easy to use correctlyand unaware of the importance of this system to the discourse. Therefore, the Englisharticle system was a “psychomechanism” (Hewson, 1972: 132). Master (1997: 216) saidsome learners thought the misuse of English articles, to a certain extent, do not make itdifficult for listeners to understand and communicate, so it is unnecessary andinappropriate to make a great effort to learn English articles correctly and even accurately.For Chinese learners, however, the correct use of English articles is necessary and alsorequired. It is a guarantee to master English with a deep understanding and the exactmeaning and thought. The English article learning presents many problems for Chinesestudents, particularly when they do not have an equivalent structure in their first language.Master (1990: 461) pointed out that “the English article system is one of the mostdifficult aspects of English grammar for normative speakers and one of the latest to befully acquired”.Scholars both at home and abroad have contributed to the understanding of thiselusory and complex system from different perspectives. Particularly, the Chinesescholars have paid much attention to the general usage of English articles which is on thespecific aspect by providing lists of examples and elaborate explanation for Chinesestudents on English learning. However, because of the flexibility of English articles,Chinese students have troubled in their usage. In most grammar books on learningEnglish as a foreign language, there would be simply pages of rules which often seem tobe impossible to remember.

1.2 Research Questions
This study aims to investigate the mastery of English articles by junior high schoolstudents. The research questions are as follows:
(1) How much do junior high school students know about the functions of Englisharticles?
(2) What is the present situation about the mastery of the rules in using Englisharticles by the junior high school students?
(3) What regularities can be found in junior high school students’ mastery ofdifferent uses of English articles?

Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Definition of the English Article
The Article of English is a word or any of a small set of words used before a noun toexplain whether the noun refers to something particular or something general: the definite“the” ,the indefinite “a /an” and zero article “Ф”. English articles are functional wordsbefore nouns, which help the noun to illiterate the meaning. Why do nouns need articlesto help and explain? This is the problem. Because the noun has an inherent contradiction:such as the word “student”, it can refer to “individual student”, also can be summarized“all the students”.
