In this article, in some additions are provided for process improvements which are newer than business process re-engineering and TQM approaches. In this paper, the production introduction process is examined in general sense and more examples are taken from automotive industry. The article is taken from the TQM magazine, volume 10. The usual tools for modeling in BPR are functional modeling, data modeling and simulation based modeling.


Process analysis tools can be divided into two categories: Software embedded tools and paper based software supported tools. Paper based tools are les s computer supported and computer support relies till help in drawing process only. There are many types of paper based tools like the 'Integrated computer aided manufacturing DEFinition methodology' or the IDEF family. IDEF is considered as a top-down hierarchical method which offers an explanation of processes and functions in manufacturing. Next type of paper bases process analysis tools is Perti Net. They are a mathematical and graphical tool that can be utilized to symbolize procedures, processes, organizations and machines. Last type of tools in this category is Role activity diagram. This method is based on the dynamics of the process. A Role activity diagram shows the task, their section activities and their communications, jointly with the logic and external events which conclude the succession of the activities.


Now talking about the simulation based modeling, there are number of tools which uses computer facility in process modeling that create diagrams that look like flow charts, but dissimilar typical flowcharting tools, they let the user attach data such as cost/assets consumed, number of unit processes, necessary time and other information connected with the activity. Some of these tools are ABC Flow Charter 7, Business Process Generator, FlowModel 2.0 etc.


The article states that essential process characteristics are complexity, interdependency, Concurrency/overlap and innovativeness. Based on these characteristics and capabilities of presently available tools, six categories are necessary in process analysis tools. These are:

•Modeling capabilities

•Simulation capabilities

•Integration capabilities
