Abstract
The language is a part of the culture, and the carrier of the culture at the same time." The language and the culture are two symbol systems which are closely related to each other."( E. A Nida,2001,139) The culture can not get away from the language. The language can not get away from the culture ,either. It’s impossible to translate a foreign language text without considering the culture it embodies. Proverb, as part of idiom, is the essence and crystallization of a language and culture. It is the summary of life experiences of the people in a particular district. Usually, it is short but it can reflect the special features of a certain culture. Therefore, the accurate translation of the proverb does not only involve the phonetic conversion but also involve the cultural conversion. It depends on whether the translator can express the connotation of the original article to the readers exactly. It requires that the translator must know the foreign culture background well. This
thesis tries to analyze the differences of the cultural features between English and Chinese proverbs from the aspects of geography, religious beliefs, habits and customs etc. We’d better take the proverbs as the means to pry into the culture and deepen our understanding about the differences of the cultural features between English and Chinese , so as to improve our translation.
Key words: proverb; culture; connotation; difference
一、引言
何为谚语?英语、汉语都有明确的定义。
“A proverb is a brief familiar maxim of folk wisdom, usually compressed inform, often involving a bold image and frequently a jingle that catches the memory.”(Longman .Modern English Dictionary 1976:899)“a proverb is a short saying in common use that strikingly expresses some obvious truth or familiar experience.”(Webster’s New World Dictionary of the American Language 1988:1083).
“Proverb are the daughter of daily experience.” (谚语是日常经验的女儿。)
“A proverb is much matter decocted into few words.”(众多的事理经过煎煮,凝结成寥寥数语,这便是谚语。)[1]
A stitch in time saves nine.(小洞不补,大洞吃苦。)
It is hard to catch birds with empty hands.(空手捕鸟,徒劳无益。)
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.(双鸟在林,不如一鸟在手。)
(二)民族性
谚语来源于生活,它就像一面镜子一样能逼真地反映一个民族的文化特征。它具有鲜明的民族性,各个
