ive a systematical and comprehensive analysis to theinterpersonal meanings of modality in Obama's speeches of different kinds, which willbe a new research perspective for speech analysis. Secondly, this thesis aims to find outthe relationship between the speaker's use of specific modality device and the speechtype, and further finds out the factors influencing the speaker's choice of specificmodality device. No matter what the findings are，they are expected to contribute to theunderstandings to the interpersonal meanings of modality. Thirdly, this thesiscomplements the findings of the previous researches and contributes to the research ofspeech analysis.

The following questions frame in the research in this thesis:1. How are the interpersonal meanings revealed by different value of finite modaloperators?2. How are the interpersonal meanings revealed by different modal adjuncts ofmodality?3. How are the interpersonal meanings revealed by different metaphors ofmodality?4. What are the factors influencing the speaker's choice of different linguisticrealizations of modality?

1.5 Organization of the Thesis论文结构
This thesis falls into six chapters in all. Chapters one gives a brief and generalintroduction of the thesis as a whole. Research orientation, research rationale,significance of this thesis, research questions and organization of this thesis are included.Chapter two provides a brief literature review closely related to this thesis. Studies onspeech, interpersonal meanings in SFG and modality, especially Hallidayan modalitysystem，which is the theory foundation of this thesis，will be mentioned. Themethodology used in this thesis, consisting of data collection, subject selection, and dataanalysis，will be discussed in chapter three. The main part of this thesis, chapter four,deals with a systematical and comprehensive analysis of the interpersonal meanings inObama's different speeches revealed by different linguistic realizations of modality.Chapter five gives the results getting from the study in the previous chapters. The authorfurther discusses the factors influencing the speaker's choice of modality in this chapter.Chapter six is about a summary including conclusions and implications of the currentresearch. Some limitations of this thesis and suggestions given to the researchers infuture are also mentioned.
