By the means of occupational euphemism,the mass suffering discrimination，for instance, the people of color, the have-nots,women and the people undertaking all kinds of menial jobs or professions of lowersocial status, at least gained some euphemistic names pleasant to ears, though theirsocial status might not have acquired any virtual improvement.The thesis aims to do detailed and systematic analysis and research on theoccupational euphemisms which are more often used in modem times.

1.2 Significance of the Study研究意义
In our daily communicative activities，occupation is regarded as one of the mostsensitive topics，which is widely and deeply penetrated into all kinds of socialactivities. There are so many pleasant occupational titles such as engineer or scientist，but we also have many humble occupational titles such as the garbage man and labor.The communication and interaction of various occupational groups may be influencedby different occupational terms especially people with the superior occupation mayhurt the inferior occupational groups. Different from the scientists and engineers, thegarbage men and labors will be ashamed to speak out their occupations because theiroccupations are humble to some extent, and they are the servers of the scientists andengineers. In modem times, people are keen to avoid hurting with each other out ofthe sense of self-respect，so they desire to use occupational euphemisms in place ofsome humble occupational titles. In modem times, occupational euphemisms becomemore and more popular in the western countries，and even have been penetrated intoevery aspect of social activities. Thus，almost all the humble occupations have theirown beautiful, favorable and pleasant names. In a result，the study on the occupationaleuphemism is of deep significance and great importance. Besides, this subject fills notonly the vacancy of the research on the branches of euphemism, also can benefit thelanguage learners who can deeply understand this kind of special languagephenomenon, which can be widely applied to the life and teaching activities.The thesis aims to do complete and systemic study and analysis on theoccupational euphemism. It not only benefits the language learners a lot，also helpthem to master more about different cultures in the eastern and western countries.What's more, through the contrast of English and Chinese occupational euphemism,the study can reveal the universality and specialty of this special languagephenomenon. Therefore, the research on this subject has a great significance inpractice, especially for some applied linguistics such as translation，lexicographer andthe foreign language teacher.
