ie.Apart from this, a number of other examples arrest the audi ence’s attention: Adam’s Rib, East of Eden, Easter Parade, theSun also Rises, Silence of the Lamb, Eye for Eye, Original Sin andso on. 3.3 Linguistic cultural element in movie title电影片名中的语言文化元素

English movie title, as a form of name, has its distinctive lin guistic features. Generally speaking, it is in short form and withoutcomplicated sentence structure. To create the artistic beauty ofmovie title and attract the audience, some rhetorical devices are ad opted, such as simile, metaphor, oxymoron, pun, personification, parody, allusion, irony, hyperbole and the like. As previously men tioned, the naming approaches contain naming by personal name.In this situation, the movie title generally employs one or two wordsto present to the audience. They may be the name of the hero orheroine, or time, place, object or the critical year when the storyhappens. Apart from the application of single word in movie title, the employment of phrasal structure is frequently observed. For ex ample, the noun phrases: Brave Heart, Days of Thunder, Touch ofEvil, Strangers on a Train; verb phrases: Singing in the Rain, Waituntil Dark, Catch Me if You Can, Escape from L.A; and preposi tional phrases: In Love and War, From Mao to Mozart, In ColdBlood, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and so on. Sometimes a longsentence will meet our eye, such as When a Man Loves a Woman,It Happened One Night, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, It’s aWonderful Life, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, The Mirror HasTwo Faces and so on. After all, this type of sentence in movie titleis not a frequent phenomenon.Movie title, as a special artistic form, is supposed to furnishthe audience with aesthetic pleasure. Generally speaking, the aes thetic effect of the movie title is achieved by the application of rhe torical devices. Rhetoric is a means of effective or persuasivespeaking or writing, especially the exploitation of figures of speechand other compositional techniques. The application of rhetoricaldevices in the movie title can arouse the audience’s imagination, conjure up them into watching the movie and bring forth aestheticsatisfaction.Take One Flew over Cuckoo’s Nest for example. Here thecuckoo’s nest cannot be understood according to the literal mean ing. Otherwise it will cause misunderstanding. In English culture, apart from referring to a kind of bird, cuckoo is a slang indicating afoolish or crazy person because the cuckoo always lays its eggs intoother birds’nest and is considered to lose his mind. In the movieone Flew Over Cuckoo’s Nest, the story tells us that upon admit tance to a mental institution, a brash rebel rallies the patients totake on the oppressive head nurse, a woman he views as more dicta tor than nurse. So it is clear that the cuckoo’s nest refers to a men tal institution. It is a typical example to demonstrate the applica tion of metaphor in movie title and its artistic splendor can evokethe audience’s curiosity and desire to watch the movie.Another interesting example is the movie title who’s Afraid ofVirginia Woolf. The name is created from the combination ofWho’s Afraid of the Big Bad Bad Wolf which is a theme song of an imation Three Pigs and the famous female writer’s name VirginiaWoolf. The story reveals that a bitter agi论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
