摘要:In this paper, I decided to express my understanding of teaching culture with a role play and I will use the term a role play a to determine a teaching technique in which the students are asked to identify with the given familiar or non-familiar roles and to interact with the other role characters within the given sociocultural situation.

For example, Hellen Keller, who could not see anything, when she was yong, because of her blindness, she did not know what other people said. But her great teacher taught her eveything, she let Hellen touch the stream water to know what is stream. By the experience way, Hellen learned a lot of things. Also to us, experience is a good way to study. In our classes, how to let students experience the culture and different knowledge in our textbook, then it is the role play teaching method.
Comprehending a text is an interactive process between students’ background knowledge and the text. Carrell mentions that “reading comprehension depends crucially on the reader’s being able to relate information from the text to already existing background knowledge4 and a reader’s failure to activate an appropriate schema during reading results in various degrees of non-comprehension. The nature of the interactive approach is that higher-level processing abilities are significant, while many lower-level processing skills found the basis to good reading.
A better comprehension of the knowledge is the best way to learn the knowledge, and it ia found that in the class, if you let the students to actively take part in it, then they will be interested it, and can comprehend the centent easily. Then the role play teaching method is brought onto the class. Also in the culture teaching class, if the students can role play the content in the texbook, after they experience them, then they will have a better understanding and deeper impression.
So next the application of the role play in the culture teaching will be discussed in the following.
III. The Application of Role Play in Culture Teaching
The role play teaching way is a method in which the teacher organize some students to play the part in a specified situation, perform the typical event in the situation and solve the confliction in the specified situation. In teachings, especially the English language teaching in China, to imitate or extend the story situation in the textbook, and through the role play in the situation, can help students to communicate with each other by English. The pragmatics in the communicative ability mainly focus on the appropriacy of language use in the specified situation, to achieve the object of transfer the information and contact emotions. And the role play teaching method used on the class will lay foundation for the English communication in the real situation. Littlewood devided the role play into six categories, while Shaoju Xu devided it into two---controlled role play and free role play5. The controlled role play will execute as the dialogues and contents in the textbook, while the free role play will execute, except for the dialogues and contents in the textbook, other situations designed by the teacher.
For the textbook., the teacher should choose some interesting and good parts to let students role play them, which can help to advance students’ communication ability and problem analysis and solving ability.
With the development of the multimedia, the teacher can collect more interesting parts to be role played by students.
