摘要:In this paper, I decided to express my understanding of teaching culture with a role play and I will use the term a role play a to determine a teaching technique in which the students are asked to identify with the given familiar or non-familiar roles and to interact with the other role characters within the given sociocultural situation.
eaching method, there are six baisc parts. Firstly, students should be familiar with the text. In our textbook, the contents of passages are very abundant, and behind every passage there are a lot of profound philosophy. So the teacher should organize students to read the text to understand the main idea of the text and sort out the text structure. This part can be done by students themselves, and the teacher can check the result on class. Through the preview, the teacher can arrange students to read the text or read the dialogue in different roles and can ask them some questions related to the text to add their comprehension to the text.
Secondly, the teacher or some students introduce the background of the text. In the culture teaching, every culture has its background---how it become, and always there is some history or geography background. The teacher or students can introduce the things that they know about it, for example, the Scots men wear kilt, which is very strange to us. But in many movies, magazines, or books, a lot of people have seen it, so there maybe some introduction of it, then it can be explained to students. Always in the background, there will be many topics for students to discuss. For different cultures, the students have their own thoughts and can have more discussions. Also, they can extend the topic to develop their imagination space. In their real life, maybe some students have this similar experience, he or she can share it to the other students.
Thirdly, the teacher will teach the text carefully to help students to experience the situation in the text. Through the preview, the text has left students a general idea in their minds. But to give students clearer and more lively image, the teacher should guide students to read and listen to the text more and carefully. Based on the foundation that students have comprehend the text, the teacher can interpret the key points of the text to help students understand the text more. Also for the key points, the teacher can arrange some questions for students to discuss, by this way, students can enlarge their minds to think more about the text. Through this, students will understand the text completely. To begin with, choose a situation for a role play, keeping in mind students needs and interests. The teacher should select role plays that will give the students an opportunity to practice what they have learned. At the same time, we need a role play that interests the students. One way to make sure your role play is interesting is to let the students choose the situation themselves. They might either suggest themes that intrigue them or select a topic from a list of given situations. To find a situation for a role play, write down situations you encounter in your own life, or read a book or watch a movie, because their scenes can provide many different role play situations. You might make up an effective role play based on cultural differences.
Fourthly, depending on the needs of the roles, students will be devided into several groups, and in each group everyone has his or her role in the text. The arrangement of the roles can depend on the seats in the classroom or students’ wills. All the dialogues and actor’s lines should be designed by themselves, but should not be deviated from the original characteristcs in the text. Before the rehearsal, the teacher should remind the students of their moods and expressions
